I'm listening to Colter's show from yesterday and I just have to say I'm amazed at the level of disrespect.
First they think Junior Bergen would be worth 2 All American linemen and our second best pass rusher, just completely ignoring that we already have a pretty good punt returner in Taco and Ty McCullouch is no slouch either. We might be able to somewhat overcome the loss of Wehr and Perkins but our offense would drop a lot closer to griz level without them. The idea that those 2 plus Eiden is a fair trade for Bergen is just stupid. It's fair for the griz because Bergen is their entire offense but it would make no sense for us.
Then the idea that we would trade Grebe for a TE, or a package of them, when we've proven we can utilize the ones we have on the roster is also insulting. But they assume the griz would say no and we'd have to counter with something else when it's just assumed that the Bergen trade is fair. And we also wouldn't need one of their OL if we don't make the dumb Bergen trade. I also liked the idea that we trade Grebe for a younger guy that isn't as good and isn't a fit but has 2 years remaining instead of one.
"Not that the Cats need another running back..." Yeah, you could have just ended your thought there and moved on to another position. The number 2 rushing team in the country for the last 2 years, despite a ton of injuries, doesn't need anyone who ran the ball for the "prolific" griz offense.
I'm usually in Colter's corner when people criticize him but that was a crazy segment.

Eh, it was purely a hypothetical and it seemed shooting from the hip on a question online. Nothing to get to worked up about. I would like to think if he and Andrew had more time to think about it they would probably change some answers.
You are correct though. If you asked a football coach to draft his team, a QB, a good Tackle on the Oline, and pass rusher would be the top 3 choices. Just watch an NFL draft. To insinuate that a team would trade not only a Left Tackle but the best one in the country (plus the best center in the conference and a good D-lineman) for a dynamic return guy is a head scratcher. Bergen is great, a valuable WR and an absolute nightmare in the Special teams but a ton of what he does is scheme. There is a reason the Griz have had so many good returners under BH. Mariani, Lewis-McGee, Flowers, Bergen. I honestly think Booby would trade Bergen for Wehr straight across because he knows he can scheme it for another guy and the drop off wouldn't be gigantic. You can't scheme 6'4" 300+ of athletic nastiness.
Wehr is the best at what he does in the country according to people who know way more than I do. I'm not sure JB is even the best in conference at what he does. He's just talent meeting the right spot. If you told me the Cats could get a return guy (and they could have gotten this guy maybe), I'd take Williams out of Idaho(Weber) over JB. That dude has something scheme proof, straight up speed. I think he would be a better fit for the Cats.
Wehr is a league guy and will get plenty of looks and I think most likely be a draft pick. Bergen to me is closer to Flowers than he is Rashid Shaheed. One of those guys is in the NFl and the other isn't.

You do realize they have a returning FCS freshman of the year tailback, correct? Bergen is certainly not their entire offense.

Bergen is the only reason you got as far as you did.

I was thinking the same thing when I was listening. I also liked Andrew's point that there would be a Red Sox/Yankees style embargo on trades between the Cats and Griz

To defend Colter, there is a difference between what Bergen is worth, and what Bergen is worth to UM. He even said that MSU would turn that offer down, but that’s what UM would say they need to trade Bergen.

Yes, I’ve talked to Colter a couple times about this. He was of the opinion last year that UM’s top two players (Bergen and Gubner) were ahead of anyone on MSU’s crew, but that MSU had a big edge the rest of the way down the ladder. Ergo they would need a lot from MSU for either player.

We were literally having fun in real time based on a text in to the show to fill summer air time

No prep whatsoever.
Shooting from the hip and basically just filling in what players each team would ask for. So when I say what the Griz would ask for in a trade for Bergen, strictly looking a the Griz needs. What the Cats are looking for in exchange for Grebe is basically asking "what 3-4 players could fill some holes for the Bobcats from the Griz roster." It's like Bill Simmons' NBA trade machine!
To be clear: the Cats & Griz would NEVER trade with each other under any circumstances (duh) and I also don't think the Bobcats would give up a player like Brody Grebe for 10 players, no matter who they are. And the same thing for the Griz and Bergen. Bergen dictates everything Montana does when it comes to Hauck's obsession and mastery of dominating the field position game.
And for what Montana State wants its culture to be - cowboy, working class, tough has hell, respectful — NOBODY embodies it better than Brody Grebe.
It's not all that serious....especially when it's August! Just answering questions from the text line.
Which, by the way, send over your segment ideas to 406-888-1029 or give us some thoughts here!

I suppose they expect to get Bergman the ball in the passing game because Brenden Hall will neutralize him in the return game!
Grossman is a good receiving tight end but hardly worth what they value him as the total package. I'd rather have the Lonergan/Provience combination and Rohan Jones as the H back. In fact Jones was chosen as the best player wearing 88 in the country (even though he's wearing 8!)
As far as Gilman goes he probably deserves to be listed as one of the top running backs in the league, but we also have about 4 of the top running backs in the league they just don't carry the ball as many times as Gillman. Give Davis, Humphery, Jones, Elliott, Coon, or White that many carries and one of them might be up there with Gillman and Larison. In fact you might as well throw Tommy in that group for that matter!

Bergen.
Anyway, his KO return vs MSU after the Bobcats scored on their first drive of the second half was huge. Hall did anything but neutralize him on that particular play. I suppose it was a bit of a fluke, but it was still probably the biggest play of the game.

I would say last year was first Bergan was an offensive weapon and not just special teams ace. Griz special teams schemes are good and multiple returners have been effective. Taco showed glimpses 1st year and injury impacted most of last year. If we compare where at in careers very similar in my opinion. Bergan better now but maybe not in long term.

He’s been an offensive weapon since he stepped foot in Missoula.
