I see where Idaho lost their starting QB with a broken collar bone. He had surgery today. He will be out several weeks.

Per my googling, 6-12 weeks for an adult. I’m guessing it all varies, especially for a healthy dude, but in a contact sport and one of his motions is an overhead throw… may be awhile. We play them at his 6th week mark, hopefully he recovers well and we and we can play them at their best.

I've broke my clavicle. 12 weeks at best.

My son just broke his collarbone this summer-same age, college athlete in a non contact sport. He's 6 weeks out from a VERY successful surgery & back to running. Doc said the collarbone is fully repaired immediately after the plate is installed, its mostly a matter of recovering from the surgery itself & getting back into playing shape...like SparkCat said, a throwing motion is going to be a challenge on the soft tissues.

6 weeks is pretty optimistic, 12 weeks is totally manageable.

I fractured my collarbone cleanly; no surgery required. I was riding motorcycles the next week. And while that may be different than taking a hit from a Bobcat DL; the type of fracture will dictate how long they are out. With it requiring surgery, it too will vary. So… who knows?

I wish him a speedy recovery!

I had the same injury/surgery while playing hockey back in college. I had surgery in mid October and didn't get back in a game until mid January. He *might* be back by playoffs, even that is probably pushing it.

Surgery reduces the recovery time significantly. For an athlete, these surguries are more elective than required due to the drastically faster recovery in a surgical vs non-surgical repair.

But, yeah, could be a range of outcomes.

Tyler Hamilton was a professional cyclist who crashed at the Tour d France on stage 1 and won the stage anyway. He continued to ride the Tour with a broken collarbone into the Alps and Pyrenees. The pain was so intense that he ground down 11 teeth that had to be replaced. So it likely depends on how his pain threshold is, and how he recovers from surgery, but he’ll not be the same this season for sure!

I wouldn't need a broken bone to make me grind 11 teeth sitting in a bike saddle that long.

So how good is their backup? Likely this will have a negative affect on their season unless the next guy up is really good. I'm sure the coach will encourage the team to rise up, but losing a starting QB always seems to take the wind out of the sails. Best wishes to him in his recovery. Tough break, literally.

I think they will be able to weather the storm fairly well, mostly because of their defense. Their DL is going to make things tough on a lot of teams. Not saying they will win every game I thought they would while Layne is out, but they'll be in every game with a chance to win.

Idaho's schedule during this stretch where they definitely won't have Layne is pretty brutal.
