South Dakota - Let’s go 1-0

Post by The MICKSTER » Sun Dec 15, 2024 10:30 am

FYI here is the Coyote fan board ... https://usdcoyotesports.proboards.com/b ... e-football

I thought their OL protected well and their run defense was stout vs UCD.

Hopefully we can get healthier and go 1-0 this week.

Let’s maximize our home field advantage BOBCAT FANS!!!

NDSU/SDSU/MSU/SD are for sure the best 4 teams all year ... I think Davis was #5 and Idaho was #6 so the playoffs finished how they should.

I'd love someone with more football knowledge than me (belligerent/VIM/Texan ... most posters) to give me a breakdown of what they observed from SD excluding yesterday's game (too many turnovers for both teams).

I'd rather play the 'yotes than the Rabbits / Bizon ... I really like that we are home ... but SD seems to have a very, very good defense, plays offense very balanced, have beaten most of their opponents by a lot. I'm not terribly concerned with their WR's, but to me their OL, RB and TE looked very good. QB has talent, but if pressured I think could make mistakes.

I'd imagine Montana State's defensive gameplan is similar to when we played Davis ... send some blitz packages because their QB is a big statue in the pocket.

I'd like Scottre back, but I'd imagine this is a game where we see Tommy run it 12+ times either way.

Also, I believe former Bobcat, Garrett Coon plays for the Coyotes

USD is obviously a really good team. Their OL bothers me. Big and block well. They don't use angles much, rather just be bigger and stronger. Their rb is good because of his line and his effort. I don't see anything that jumps out to me ability wise(speed, size, quickness, etc). With that said he maximizes every bit of his talent every play and he doesn't back down. He's the kind of back that will have 10 negative plays then on the 11th go for 80 because he just never stops running hard.

The qb is a statue. He doesn't like to throw on time. He needs for the wr to be clearly open for him to be comfortable throwing it. When he has to throw to a spot he double clutches or if he has to throw well covered guy he doesn't seem to have faith in either his arm or his wrs. Wrs don't scare me I think Idaho 's wrs are much better and outside of one really big play we held up well.

Defensively I was impressed with usd then I realized that larison wasn't playing. One play Larison was in on that I saw they scored on and he was a decoy, lol. They worry me because they are really really good in the redzone but so are we. We showed a level of creativity last game that I believe is going to cause usd some issues. Our OC gave them a lot to gameplan for that we didn't do in previous games, and they still have to figure out how to stop our bread and butter. I see us pounding the rock in this game, week 3 type of game plan.

What I suspect will be the flow of the game is we jump on them early controlling the clock being methodical. Tommy looks like last year Tommy, using his legs to influence the game early. Defense I think comes out on fire. We play tight sticky coverage and this qb doesn't like it. We'll get to the qb through blitzes which will also help clog up the run. They'll move the ball some but the combination of our offense controlling the time of possession and the aggressive nature of our defense will have us up going into half, more of the same in the 2nd half in which we have the 2s in beginning of the 4th.

To me, this matchup is a blessing in disguise. I am not all overlooking USD, but this game seems like the perfect warm up/measuring stick for playing either NDSU or SDSU. Feel like USD plays a similar style of ball to NDSU and SDSU; smashmouth MVC style ball.

Did see their game yesterday and they confirmed what i suspected. They're big and tough in the trenches. Feels like their MO is get a lead, stop the run and lean on you. They did turn the ball over i think 3 times, so maybe they're susceptible to giving the ball away.

Think the Cats have a clear speed and athleticism advantage. USD also went toe to toe with a Davis team who turned the ball over 7(?) times; the same Davis team MSU dominated for 55 minutes.

Playing a MVC team in December seems to be the Bobcats kryptonite so it's hard not to have at least a little bit of doubt about this game. Helps we're playing in Bozeman. By 5pm on Saturday we'll know exactly what we are. I'm cautiously confident. The Cats seem to have that "it" factor about them. Just gotta slay that MVC dragon.

SD has shown they are vulnerable to the +1 run game.

I think they are aware of that and will game plan to limit Tommy, which will give the RBs and TEs room to work. The Cat offense is complete.

We need the secondary to play well and limit explosive pass plays. QB pressure will be key.

You’re asking the wrong guy here chief. I don’t know much other than I think we’ll win. I’d feel better if Humphrey and Polidore were for sure healthy & playing.

Brode Grebe might just have a good day, He will be coming from the blindside on the Lefty QB for USD. By golly we might even see a holding call or 2 for a change. Any Word on which officiating conference crew for the game?

USD only gives up 16.6ppg this season, but have given up 29ppg over the last 4 games. Statistically VERY similar to MSU. Bouman (QB) has similar passing attempts and completions as Tommy, but Tommy has 9 more passing TD’s. Their QB also has net negative rushing yards in each of the past 3 seasons, so he is not a factor in the run game whatsoever. Their top 2 backs have similar, but not quite as good, stats as Humphrey/Jones. I did notice that most of their playmakers on offense are very short, all between 5’7 and 5’11, but seem like very stout dudes. Galbreath is their TE that just returned from injury and they seem to like to go to him quite a bit. Their O-line and really their entire defense has some big time size. They are without a doubt on the level of the other Dakotas—they all split with each other this year and shared the MVFC title, with USD losing at SDSU in OT by 3 and beating NDSU by 1 at home. Will be a great test and one hell of an atmosphere on Saturday!!

I think the biggest difference here is MSU wouldn’t have given up 36 to UND or 31 to Tarleton.

I'm just happy we're playing USD instead of UCD. The outcome will be the same but at least we (the team and the fans) get to see a new team and get a better idea of how we match up against the DSUs.

Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!

To me the biggest keys will be getting pressure on their qb and not allowing him to be comfortable in the pocket, and also our DBs have to really show up on those slant and down and out routes

All last week we were hearing how much better Idaho was after their 6 game winning streak. But they played bottom dwellers whom they should have beat if we're being honest. USD played the DSUs close, well, and beat one during the regular season. This is a different level of competition. But then you watch the game Saturday with the incredible amount of turnovers and scratch your head.

Idaho brought their A game and the 1st quarter was a bit concerning. I actually posted something about not panicking, a couple guys replied that they were. Then the 2nd quarter happened. But so much of that had to do with what Idaho did wrong rather than what the Cats did right I think. There were dropped passes, they were giving our run game fits which did open up Tommy, they had a pick, which frankly just motivated Tommy more haha, and there was a big play (maybe all that was in the 1st quarter, but anyway). I'm not certain USD will shoot themselves in the foot like Idaho did. Do I think the Cats are better, definitely yes, but playing smart, clean, limiting mistakes, and a strong run game will likely be necessary. I'm not convinced the 2s and 3s get in this game, but I hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

I have no idea where we're at injury wise, and yes I know we've proven to be pretty at the next man up deal this season, but if all these players below don't play (I think some of them will but I've heard conflicting stories), then this game suddenly got a whole lot more challenging.

The Cats were built to steam roll everyone up to this point. They’ve done that, which is impressive and been fun to watch. USD is by far the best team we’ve lined up against. I watched almost two quarters of their game in Brookings and only the 4th quarter against NDSU. There might be match up advantages position by position. But what stands out to me is their physical and mental toughness. Saturday is going to be a battle that will take all four quarters. If there is one take home, it’s that the Yotes did something MSU hasn’t and that’s beat the Bison.

The official NCAA FCS page posted a tail of the tape and statistically both teams are really even.

Not without Rohan, Scottre, and Julius it's not. Good enough? That remains to be seen, but I think so. I just don't want Tommy to be too active. If he goes down, the Cats are done.

I've got us by two scores on Saturday.

dress everyone, injured or not. worked for a score for UCD when an injured running back took a wildcat snap... hell, but a uniform on Troy and just have him on the sidelines....
