Re: Justin Lamson Transfers in
I wonder when he will be on campus? Meaning will he be at spring ball?

I don't see how he could be. He has to finish out his semester at Bowling Green.

Yeah, there's no possible way he could participate in Spring Ball at this point. Glad to have him joining the team though, sounds like the type of player who can do well in MSU's offense. The Butcher wrote: ↑Tue Mar 18, 2025 8:10 amI don't see how he could be. Re: Justin Lamson Transfers in
I knew something was up when Sterbick and the rest of the new staff started to follow him in February after Bowling Green announced they changed coaching staffs. He was offered after the title game in January but chose Bowling Green. For a QB, he's carried the rock a lot the past two years. He morphed into Stanford's short-yardage QB last year and rushed 68 times for 94 yards and 8 touchdowns. He started 3 games in 2023 but was eventually benched and moved into the SY QB role. At least that's the way I see it.
He has a long throwing motion but he's a confident thrower. If he sees it, he's gonna let it rip. I think he's a tough kid and runs hard but he's mostly scrambling to throw instead of scrambling to run if that makes sense.
So...is this going to turn into a Chambers/Mellott combo again with Lamson/Wilson or will it be a competition where one wins out and is the full-time starter? I think its going to be a mix of both. Frankly, if we get any production that is better than at least Tyler Bruggman but not as good as Tommy, we have the team depth and talent around our QB to win a lot of games. Need the QB to be the leader though so that may be the ticket to winning the job in Vigen's system. He believed in Tommy as a freshman because Tommy could lead (and run really fast). I don't think he'll participate in Spring Ball so Chance Wilson and the other QBs have an opportunity to shine before summer hits.

I wouldn’t go penciling him in as the starter. The quarterback situation is still very much up in the air. Fortunately for MSU the offense isn’t terribly reliant on the quarterback.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Against top competition, they'll have to prove that in 2025. Tommy made up for a lot of players not rising to the occasion against UC Davis, South Dakota, and NDSU. That's also what made Tommy great.
Not saying I disagree...but it will be interesting to see how Sterbick implements changes or updates the offense.

Here's a link to a highlight reel of the kid. Definitely seems like the Sean Chambers type. I'm optimistic, but also a few of these highlights came in the final seconds of a game when they were down 14+ and likely going against the 2nd string defense of the opposing team.
I am very excited to see what he can do for us, and it might be nice to have a starting QB for the Oregon game that's actually played at that level before. Whoever gets the starting job is gonna have a hell of an introduction with our first two games.

Looks like he red-shirted in 2021, and then was injured and missed the season with injury in 2022, and played for Stanford in 23 and 24, so 2 years of eligibility despite Stanford listing him as a senior?

Re: Justin Lamson Transfers in
You're correct, two years of eligibility left assuming he took a medical redshirt for the 2022 season. He graduated from Stanford already so will be a grad student at MSU.4KornerKat wrote: ↑Tue Mar 18, 2025 8:50 amLooks like he red-shirted in 2021, and then was injured and missed the season with injury in 2022, and played for Stanford in 23 and 24, so 2 years of eligibility despite Stanford listing him as a senior?

In the simplest terms...this makes the Bobcats better in 2025.

I don’t think you can find a modern college offense that isn’t reliant on the QB to a large degree.
Can MSU beat mid level teams with mediocre QB play? Probably. But that isn’t the goal. The goal is to be a championship contending team, or at minimum, a conference contending team, and MSU absolutely is very reliant on a good QB to do so.

Lamson is I think, the ideal fit for how Vigen likes to play.
He is good sized, tough, can run, can hit the deep ball. I think he’s very similar to Chambers but more consistent and less turnover prone. I don’t think he’s going to split time with anybody either.

There’s a big difference between a good quarterback and a quarterback who plays good. MSU will have a quarterback who plays good.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Tue Mar 18, 2025 9:23 amI don’t think you can find a modern college offense that isn’t reliant on the QB to a large degree.

My uncle went the other direction, graduated from MSU first and then went to Stanford for his master degrees, but he didn't play football.

Re: Justin Lamson Transfers in
Interesting. If nothing else, he's experienced depth that has started in the past. Prior to this, I was cautiously optimistic about the MSU QB room for the upcoming season. I completely agree that this makes the 2025 Bobcats better and I would hope that the current guys in the QB room see it this way as well.
Having Chambers still on staff as Exhibit A of how important it is to have experienced talent waiting if/when the starter gets dinged is invaluable. He and Tommy were selfless enough and humble enough to make it work about as well as a 2 QB system ever has (Tebow and Leak are really the only other really good example that immediately comes to mind). He can stay in their ears about this fact and if they are truly team first guys - like Tommy and Chambers were - there's plenty of snaps to go around. Especially considering that deep playoff runs are now the standard for MSU Football.
Teams who successfully navigate injuries that are bound to happen in such a long season will likely be right there at the end with as good a chance as any to win the Chipper.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.
