Roster

Post by canyoncat » Thu Jun 05, 2025 8:41 am

Was looking tbrough the the 2025 roster on the MSU Web-site and noticed a few players are still missing or have left. Don't remember seeing anything if they retired or entered the portal.

Jaden Prekins OL
Maclain Burckley WR
Casey Kautzman K
Tyson Pottenger S
Devin Davis DB
Chase Kruse DL
Nick Krorom DL
Ryan Nansel DB

Pottenger would surprise me if he is gone. Perkins as well. I think Davis has battled injury most of his career. The rest minus Kautzman I don't know much about.

One of the Perkins left, one stayed.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Jaden left the team after last season. Burckley transferred to Western. Kautzman transferred to Tech. Davis battled injuries and I believe he is still in Bozeman. Korom was a senior last season. Nansel retired after last season. I don't know what happened to Pottenger. Kruse was a walk on and I'm guessing there wasn't a spot for him.

Pottenger left the team as well. Has not resurfaced anywhere as of yet. I randomly walked out of the BAC next to him on the way to the bubble on MSU's Pro Day. Asked him what he thought he could do in the vertical after watching Grebe and Mellott tear it up. He said "last time I tested, I got 39.5 inches". He was definitely being serious. Good athlete. If he wants to play another year, he'll play somewhere I'd imagine.

Wish him luck. Always a hard-working kid. Just couldn’t quite crack the top of the depth chart.

I wonder if this was simply a case where he graduated and just decided to move on instead of using his fifth year of eligibility.

I thought Pottenger entered the portal before in December but the team allowed him to stay on the roster through the remainder of the season.

Looking back at old threads, Marqui Johnson and Cole Bullock were the two guys who entered the transfer portal after the regular season ended but stayed with the team. Pottenger was discussed in the 2025 two-deep thread after the season ended, so he hadn't announced he was entering the portal as of January. I don't recall whether or not he participated in Spring Ball.

Yeah, it was weird. It looked like this format from the AFA.

You had to click on the names to see the players photo. :?

Anyway, the Cats are at the max 105 players on the roster with one PWO, Seymour, not on the roster. I wonder if they are going to gray shirt Seymour or work a roster waiver for him or someone else. I know the Cats were also still looking for another DB a few weeks ago, but that may not be the case anymore.

I've read that if you opt into the House Settlement that you can be grandfathered into the 105 player roster limit and just show that you are working to get to 105 over a number of years. Could that be in play here?

I saw there was a waiver system set up in the settlement to exclude some players that were cut due to roster limits. I know um didn't opt in to the settlement because they were over on the number of overall athletes allowed in all their athletic programs. The settlement is just about football. I haven't read the whole settlement, so I don't know anything about "working to get to 105 football players."

By "stayed with the team" I meant that it was reported at the time that they were going to still be on the sidelines with the team during the playoffs even though they had entered the transfer portal after the regular season ended. Bullock is in fact going to New Hampshire for next season.
