I'm not 100% sure on this but I've had this story told to me so many times that I have to believe it's true.
Entering the 2002 Cat-Griz game Thomas had quite the reputation around the league as a braggart. Coach Kramer had his back on just about everything he said. Story goes that UM HC Joe Glenn didn't like it and wanted to humiliate Thomas. UM had an atrocious day passing the ball with the wind whipping around. I think they attempted around 15 passes in the first half and only completed one if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure how much of that was Thomas but he obviously played a role, and it was a big strategic mistake.
His take on the Cat-Griz game in this interview is awesome.

Pretty sure he blocked a field goal that day to. I was at the game, first time I had ever been to Missoula’s stadium.

Not to be a poop but, ok, here goes.
Isn't it just the "Montana Football Hall of Fame"? or is there another one for just pro's?

He did. It kept the game tied. He talks about that play in the interview.

We changed the name last year and added Pro. Because you have to be a pro to get in. Unless you get in as a contributor because you coached future pros like Sonny Holland.

I was a student at MSU at the same time Joey was. I remember when he first transferred in from UW, he was a total punk and I couldn't stand him (I'll spare the details). He has matured into a total class act, and I'm proud to say he's a fellow MSU alum.

First thing that comes to mind when I hear his name- the cat/griz game that ended the streak in missoula…. First play of the game Joey Thomas was lined up against their stud receiver (I forget his name) right at the line on the outside, at the snap Joey drove him backwards and so far out of bounds that he crashed into the cement wall…. Set the tone for the game.
He was one of those players that had no business playing in the big sky (or fcs level)….

Levander Segars. And he couldn’t get off the jam all day.

Joey got so many pi calls. He could just play them super tight and the ref would throw a flag.

Kramer insisted that Thomas was so good that the refs figured he must be doing something illegal. He was such a lightning rod with the refs that I even got tangled up in it.

Agree. Super cool when clear cut NFL players, players that could start for Michigan or any other FBS team, like Thomas... Andersen... and remember that Michael Jefferson dude? Awesome.

I stumbled upon an article or news story about Joey using a "how to raise young men" curriculum at his HS in Seattle metro. I contacted him to see how he liked it. I wanted to use some of the lessons for my Jr. High Sunday School classes. I didn't know Joey at MSU...I left before he arrived...but watched his career. Joey was very helpful and professional during our conversations. Proud to call him a fellow MSU alumn.
Congrats on your HOF election, Joey!
