The Potato Bowl

Post by BelgradeBobcat » Tue Sep 28, 2004 3:50 pm

Everyone knows that southeast Idaho is world famous for their potatoes, but did you know it's the Montana seed potato that made the Idaho potato famous? I had a local spud farmer tell me that. Anyway, good ol' MSU plays a big part in our local spud farmer's success: MSU Spud Lab Truely, you won't meet a more fussy farmer than a seed potato farmer: The Harvest is Underway

So as you pass all those potato fields and spud cellars on the way, and even as you file into ISU's Holt Arena, a building that more resembles a potato cellar than a sports venue, take a moment to think about the great contribution of Montana's Potato Farmers! Or if you're like me, and once worked in the potato harvest, reflect that no matter win or lose, this is a whole lot better than watching millions of potatoes go by on a conveyer belt.

So who's going to make the beautiful drive down Gallatin Canyon, enjoy fall colors that are sure to be in full bloom, and make their way to Pocatello to take in the game on Saturday!

Let's have some fun with this one. We all did this one in high school.

Idaho is to Potatoes as Montana is to Sheep. \:D/

See where this is going? Same old material, different author. :-({|=

I'll be making the drive down to take in the action. Anybody know if the Alumni Association has anything planned for this weekend in Pokey before the game like they did last week?

I know there is a 'party' bus going down to it from Bozeman I heard when I was down at the CSU game? Not sure if they are having a tent function or not though?

If you can come up with as interesting a segue relating to sheep, then we're on to something.

Just because it was about potatoes doesn't make it smack. Rumor has it, there actually are potato farmers near Pocatello. I doubt any other author on a sports board has ever given anyone a more educational look at the potato... an often misunderstood and overlooked member of the vegatable family.

That being said, I'm not going to be able to make it to the game this week -- cheer a little louder for me.

The F.A.T. (Football Alumni Team) always throws a tailgate party before and during the game. They are located on the east side of the Holt Arena. They accept donations for food and beer. They always make great brats and have the coldest beer.

Before the game, Robert Allen Auto Group is now sponsoring Bengalfest. This is an event that has games for the kids and adults to play. It is a great place to bring the family and have some fun before the game. If memory serves me correctly, Red Lobster will be catering and last year it was all you can eat snow crab.

As for in game consessions, you will find on the South Side (student side) there is a limited menu of goodies to eat. For a better selection, travel to the North side and enjoy pizza, yogurt, nachos, so on and so forth.

Hope to see lots of you there.

I appreciate potatoes BAC and your post just made me realize how important these magical vegetables are. Did you realize that you can use a potato that is cut in half to unscrew a broken light bulb? =D^

Snake: No, No. No smack intented-except maybe my little comment about Holt Arena. I just thought it interesting that SE Idaho and SW Montana owe so much to the potato! The small town of Manhattan (20 miles west of Bozeman) has entire festival devoted to the potato. For sheep you have to go east to Reed Point, MT for their annual sheep drive.

For those interested, the MSU website had the following about a bus to the game:
The Bobcat Boosters and MSU Alumni Association are organizing a bus trip to Pocatello, Idaho, for MSU's October 2 contest against Idaho State. The bus will leave at 8 am from the Fieldhouse south parking lot on Saturday and return after the game. Cost for the trip is $60 per person, and includes beverages, snacks, and a game ticket. For information or to RSVP, call 800-842-9028 or 406/994-3741.
