Deferring the kick

Post by GavinDonos » Sun Oct 24, 2004 2:47 pm

Some people have wondered why we usually defer kickoffs to the opposing team. I've heard Kramer say several times since he got here that he will defer every coin toss they win. His reason for this is that he feels it is more important to get that extra posession in the second half than it is in the first.

There is no way to be certain, but I think that decision, which takes place before the clock even starts, has probably saved our bacon more than once in the final seconds of some of these comeback games.

In the NFL teams rarely defer, but if you watch much college ball, you'll notice that a large number of teams prefer to get the kick in the second half. Especially the teams with good D's.

I'm pretty sure that NFL teams don't defer because they can't...I think it is absolutely the correct decision to defer and take the ball in the 2nd half. Which team has ended up with the last possession of the game the last three weeks?

I definately think that defering until the second half is the right choice for most college teams all the time. The only thing I don't like is when we have had a hard time getting the offense going, I would like to see us get it started ASAP. Now that we got the offense working in the first quarter I won't question the call unless the offense starts to sputter again.
