Signing day
Today (4/13/2011) is signing day, but I am not sure we will hear anything for the next week or so from any Montana State basketball team. Both the men and women have scholarships to offer but they may take different tacks this spring. Binford's women basketball team I think will hold their scholarship till next year where they have only one senior and a very good Montana and possibly Australian class for 2012. If they do sign anyone look for it to be a point guard.
The men will have three scholarships to offer and I expect them to fill all of them. I am also hearing we may get a couple very good walk-ons. Through out most of the winter I have been hearing about the coaches recruiting almost exclusively guards, mostly from the JC ranks. These guards have ranged from small forward to point guards, but again with an emphasis on guys who are athletic and can score the ball. One of the Guy's we had in for a visit and the coaches were high on guard Kannon Burrage of Des Moines Area JC visited a few weeks back but committed to Texas San Antonio a few days ago. Last week-end we had California JC player of the year Antonio Biglow a 6-0 combo guard as well as NJCAA All American 6-4 shooting guard Xavier Johnson-Blunt from Cochise JC in Arizona. Both have not committed yet.
Right after I heard that Cody Anderson was retiring I started to hear of some JC big men Huse might be recruiting. Most of the guys I am hearing about are in the 6-8 to 6-9 range, but the talent level varies widely, I am hearing about guys who could come in and start from day one to others who might be considered role players similarly to what Allou did this season. Talented JC big men are always at a premium this time a year and if there is a quality Big Sky starter out there unfortunately the bigger schools (mid to high majors) will come, looking for an "insurance big man" sweet talking to these guys, and filling their head with grandeur. They usually end up riding the bench for a year or two.
Now all this said maybe one or both coaches will surprise like Huse did last fall when he signed 6-9 Mohamed Fall that to me came out of the blue.
In any case I have heard we will have at least on big man in this week end and possibly more in the next couple weeks.
Like wise when I heard that that Casey Trujeque was leaving I heard that the Coaches had offered a couple high school-ish point guards. When I say "high school-ish" I mean both of the guys I had heard about are players who would come into MSU with 5 years to play 4 years of eligibility, but they are considered 5th year high school players and attended prep schools this past year.
BTW for those who asked former Bobcat signee Jordan Salley will not be eligible to sign until this November for 2012-13 school year. This past year he was averaging a double double for San Rosa JC through the first month and half of the season. Sadly his mother passed in December and he missed a lot of games. He finished the season with about a 10 points and 7 rebound average.
Also there are two German JC players on Sheridan JC who have expressed an interest in playing for the Bobcats, 6-2 guard Johannes Kriegereit and 6-8 combo forward Jermaine Lippert both of whom, like Salley, will have to spend one more year at the JC level before they can move up to D-1. Lippert showed some good progress, but played behind some very good big men at Sheridan (ranked in the top 25 most of the season), but he still needs some work to adjust to the American game. Kriegereit I have heard really needs to show a great deal of improvement if he is going to play at a 4 year American college.

Re: Signing day
I'm not sure if this is old news or not, but I see that Danny Little from Skyview initially gave a verbal commitment to MSU just signed a LOI with Rocky.

I just read that today.wbtfg wrote:I'm not sure if this is old news or not, but I see that Danny Little from Skyview initially gave a verbal commitment to MSU just signed a LOI with Rocky.
BTW
Jordan Castaneda a 6-3 point guard from California committed to the Bobcats back in November of 2009, he would have signed this year with the Bobcats. Unfortunately Castaneda was involved in an accident last May/June and severely hurt his back. He had surgery and has been going though physical therapy but missed his entire senior of basketball year due to the injury. Last I heard he was still not cleared to play basketball. I understand that the MSU coaches have been in close contact with Jordan but he will not be signing this year with the Bobcats. He is considering going to a prep school or JC next year if he is cleared to play. I am told though that Castaneda is an excellent student and is already a D-1 qualifier so you might keep your eye on that name in the future.

Re: Signing day
Hear anything about walk-ons or potential ones from in-state? Also, any news on the walk-ons from the last couple years whether or not they will continue?

Re: Signing day
I have heard of two potential Montana walk-ons, who have been asked to remain silent for now but ir should not be hard to guess, and a JC point guard walk-on (6 pts 7ast / gm)

Re: Signing day
Lincoln Powers from Bozeman would be a good guess on one of the in-state guys and after doing some research on the twitter, via the mslacat page, I would guess Ryan McCarty to be the other. How did I do mslacat???mslacat wrote:I have heard of two potential Montana walk-ons, who have been asked to remain silent for now but ir should not be hard to guess, and a JC point guard walk-on (6 pts 7ast / gm)

According to this link, he signed with RMC. Has that changed? Just curious. I hadn't heard much about him until you mentioned him. A 63 point game is pretty impressive, even in Class C!

Thank you to all who have served and are serving this country in the military, law enforcement and or as emergency responders! God bless you and your loved ones! John 15:13

Lincoln will probably end up out of state. Seattle is a strong possibility.c.falls cat wrote:Lincoln Powers from Bozeman would be a good guess on one of the in-state guys and after doing some research on the twitter, via the mslacat page, I would guess Ryan McCarty to be the other. Re: Signing day
Not sure how I found it, or how I would find it again because I am really still clueless on twitter, but the word on the street, err twitter, is that he de-comitted from Rocky. I have no idea why or what he plans on doing now.Gallatin Griz wrote:c.falls cat wrote, "I would guess Ryan McCarty to be the other."
