SUU MBB

Post by BelgradeBobcat » Sat Mar 06, 2021 6:40 pm

Congrats to the Thunderbirds on their Big Sky title.
Remember when we played a 3 or 4 win SUU team in the Big Sky tournament? We were the 6 seed and they were 11. They beat us in triple-overtime. I'm pretty sure that was Todd Simon's first year. He's gotten SUU steadily better and here they are Big Sky champs and the clear favorite to win the tournament with a very talented team. SUU is in Cedar City, Utah-in the middle of nowhere-2 hours from the nearest decent airport-no fans to speak of. Yet here they are. MSU meanwhile...we're poised to get bounced out of the tournament again in our first game (does anybody really think we won't?). Sprinkle has done a good job of bringing some energy back to the program and I believe he's recruited well, but this latest late season swoon has got me a little bit depressed. Somebody tell me we're on the right track...

I’ll have to admit to being a little out of touch with men’s basketball, but where did this come from? All I heard was EWU, EWU and EWU. Sounds like there could be some excitement in the tournament.

Well, here's a trivia question: When was the last time MSU was seeded higher than UM? Not sure we deserve it though in this crazy year!
Go Cats!

Enjoy it while you can, because it sure as hell won’t last long. Also, it was an Idaho cancellation of the 2 games vs UM and 1 more MSU W away from being a 4/5 seed cat griz matchup.

I'm guessing at least 25 years.

While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

I guess by winning more games than them it makes us deserve it. All teams can do is play the games on schedule. We beat most teams below us. Lost to the higher seeds. We earned the bye, our seed, and a chance. Need to fix some defensive issues on rotating to shooters and keep Belo out of foul trouble and we have a chance. EWU seems like a tough match up for us

We had a Rob Ash type of year. And yes, we deserved to be higher than the griz.

Here is a funny one folks. I was listening to Nuanez on his radio show and the Griz were at risk of losing their streak of finishing with at least a .500 record going back so many years. Then all of sudden, the Griz add two last minute games at the very end of the season against the SAME NAIA team with Warner Pacific - both in Missoula and back to back days. Of their 13 wins, 5 of them came against NAIA or LOWER classifications! And yet still this guy comes to our site to trash talk!

We were going to play Idaho(1-20, with the one win over MSU btw) for those 2 games and would’ve won them both anyways.....When Idaho cancelled, you can’t just go 2 weeks without playing basketball before tourney time. That’s an obvious move to schedule those games on B2B days that Sprinkle would’ve made as well. And yes, congrats, the Griz were not good this year. Yet this would be an average year by MSU standards and we are one of the 3 youngest teams in the country. Enjoy this version of the Griz while it lasts. It won’t be long....

I can guarantee that it doesn't go back further than the 01-02 season. The Cats won the regular season title that year and the conference tourney was in Bozeman. Man that team was exciting to watch and even had a handful of homegrown players.

Actually it wasn't even quite that long, although it was 16 years ago, which obviously is still a very long time. In the 2004-05 season, MSU and UM tied for second, but we had the tie-breaker and got the number 2 seed, while they were seeded number 3. We had a bye into the semi-finals, and UM won their first round game, setting up a Cat-Griz matchup in the semis, and of course we lost. This came right in the middle of a 9 year winless drought in the BSC tourney. We won 2 games in 2009, and then had another 9 year post-season winless stretch. before winning a first round game in 2019, which was after the BSC expanded the tournament to include every team. So we either missed the tourney, or lost our first game, in 18 out of 19 seasons, from 1999-2000 through 2017-18. We got to the championship game in 2009, but other than that year, we've never even made it as far as the semi-finals since the 2005 season. Other than 2009, the last two times we made the semi-finals, in 2002 and 2005, it was because we had a first round bye, and didn't have to win a game to get there. So 2009 is the only year we've actually won our way into the semis, since 1999. That is quite a record of post-season futility. I remain optimistic that Sprinkle will eventually get the job done, but I don't think this is the year that we're gonna break through and get back to the semis.
