ESPN+ WBB Announcer

Post by arvcat2 » Tue Nov 22, 2022 6:48 am

This incompetence deserves its own thread. As stated in other threads, this announcer has minimal, if any play by play skills, and consistently rambles on about some remotely connected topic all the while seemingly oblivious to the live action in front of her. Will she get better at it? Perhaps so, but subjecting the viewers to on the job training reflects poorly on the team, the university, and the sport.

This retweet is from the WBB account yesterday is interesting. I hope it’s a subtle message that they are aware of the issue:

We’re becoming a very tough crowd…….. we’re harder on the announcer learning on the job, then we were on the experienced announcer who degraded women.

Don’t rewrite history. I very much remember how hard posters on here where with the experienced announcer. That announcer lost his job, not for degrading women, but for, during a broadcast, comparing PSU players on court play to prominent violent organizations in the Portland community.

Back to our “learning on the job” announcer, she should be learning the job broadcasting high school games somewhere, not at a division 1 college program.

Perception is an interesting thing……. Because I felt it was degrading. You also don’t seem to remember some of his other comments.
Let’s give the announcer a chance. No doubt she reads and hears about the comments. We’ve been fortunate to have some great announcers over the years. She might develop into one of them.

Give a chance? As pointed out, this is a division one program. This program is defending Big Sky champs and poised to repeat. This is Bozeman, one of the best places to live in country. There is no way this young woman should be doing play-by-play at this level at this point in her career.

My advice for the women's announcer would be that when the game is going on, you need to be...calling the game. You don't need to be like a radio announcer and narrate everything that happens, but at least say who made the shot or got the rebound or was called for the foul. Anecdotes about famous graduates of the opposing school are fine during breaks in play, but not during the game itself - then it's just distracting.
