How about that! Jalen Cone can't best us at Cal either. Glad were done playing that guy. Good win. I don't know anything about Cal and whether or not they're any good, but I don't care-this is a great win for Logie and his group.

Good win but there's a lot of work to do, specifically offensive rebounding and 3s

Despite shooting 16% from 3 point line
And getting out rebounded 30 to 25.
We still win , both teams shot about the same percentage
Good thing we got more shots up.

Yeah these numbers are not what we want going forward. Luckily Cal shot just as bad from 3 and turned the ball over(I say luckily but maybe the d was that good? I couldn't watch live. Stupid pac12 network).luckyirishguy25 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2023 8:14 amGood win but there's a lot of work to do, specifically offensive rebounding and 3s

Defense was actually phenomenal, they where all over the ball, aggressive and played strong. Walkers ball skills for a big man was impressive, he also has really good footwork. He reminds me of Drew Timme, he's going to be solid. As I said above the biggest negative I could see is offensive rebounding, they need to crash the boards after a shot and not run to the other end, they did good boards on d but not so great on O.technoCat wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2023 9:29 amYeah these numbers are not what we want going forward. I'm pretty sure that the lack of offensive rebounding is an intentional strategy. More and more teams these days are focusing on getting back to play sound defense rather than going for offensive rebounds which can lead to easy transition opportunities for the other team if you don't get them and are left out of position.luckyirishguy25 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2023 11:04 amDefense was actually phenomenal, they where all over the ball, aggressive and played strong. Cal's coach is a former NBA player who had quite the record at Utah Valley. He brought in a bunch of transfers for this years's team.

Matt Logie beat a Pac-12 team after starting his Div. 1 coaching career with:
- a ripped apart and rebuilt roster
- new coaching staff
- players have only practiced together about half a year
- no real inside presence anymore
- new offensive and defensive scheme
Yeah I'd say the guy can coach! Cat can be frisky this year!

I'm concerned about Patrick McMahon's injury. Is it serious? I missed it during the game, was it obvious and worth going back thru footage to observe ? He's really been a great asset, I like his athleticism and smooth shot.

I didn't notice anything either during the game until he never came back in during the second half and was then sitting on the end of the bench. Hopefully it's nothing major, as you say he's a great player who unfortunately hasn't really had the chance to show it yet due to injuries.

Re: Cats MBB vs Cal
Well if they want to use that strategy successfully they better hit more shots, imo you still need your big bodies to crash those boards.MSU01 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2023 11:13 amI'm pretty sure that the lack of offensive rebounding is an intentional strategy. Huge, landmark win for Coach Logie and his sturdy band. And frizz lose at home on the same night. Hopefully good omens.

Re: Cats MBB vs Cal
This might be a pretty fun season, after all. The game plan was obviously good. I loved the set inbounds plays. The team looked very crisp executing. I loved it when we came back and ran the same play they just scored on — and scored. The best cure for o-boards is to start shooting 40% from three. It was refreshing to see the offensive sets maintaining spacing on the floor — it sure creates more room to pass and run without the ball. It was nice to listen to two professional announcers on a road game, compared to what our ears usually get assaulted with. And we just beat California for the first time. Anyone else remember Kral Ferch vs. Kevin Johnson at the Brick, and Kral’s absolutely monumental dunk and the Bears’ players applauding him? Good job, Matt Logie and the guys.
