WBB vs Carroll

Post by BelgradeBobcat » Fri Nov 01, 2024 9:45 pm

Taylor Janssen and Lexi Deden not suited up. Natalie Picton played some in then 2nd quarter and then a minute or two in the 4th. First half was a hot mess. Lots of turnovers, missed assignments, bad shots. MSU trailed Carroll by 2 at halftime. 2nd half was much better. Got a double digit lead in the 3rd quarter and cruised from there winning 77-53.

Dykstra maybe added some range. Esmeralda Morales, who transferred from Portland State, is a really good guard. Leadership, defense, hustle, and of course she can really shoot it. The young players we have are extremely athletic. Taylee Chirrick from Roberts is quite and athlete and I think will get big minutes this year.

Any intel regarding Janssen, Deden or Picton? I know Deden is coming off surgery, but I'm surprised about Janssen and Picton.

I think Tricia is going to slowly work Lexi and Taylor back into the rotations in late November/December so they will hopefully be ready for conference season. Both are coming off surgeries. Not sure about Natalie, but she may be behind freshman Chirrick.

I was really impressed with all three new freshman. Chirrick is a bigger guard at 5'-11", but still very quick and athletic. Also made a three and had nine points, couple of steals. She could become a crowd favorite. They listed Addison Harris at 6'-1'', but she looks taller than Marah who is listed at 6'-2". Harris physically looks a lot like Marah and moves just as well. She also plays pretty physically-I think she will develop into a very good inside player over time. Teagan Erickson is still a bit thin, but she really jumps well and moves well. Also made a couple of nice turnaround jumpers in the key and had quite a few rebounds. these three will play a lot this year.

Wea re very deep. We had 12 suited up last night and all played, without much drop-off. The first half was ugly, but I think our depth and length and overall quickness just wore Carroll out in the second half. we full court pressed almost all of the second half and had numerous steals against a pretty good NAIA team. Shooting still needs to improve, but we will cause teams lots of problems with our D and quickness.

I really can't wait until we add Lexi to this group!

A write up about the game. Starters were KJ (Limardo) Martin, Marah Dykstra, Esmerelda Morales, Issy Bunyan, and Dylan Philip. Carroll had two griz transfers I believe in Kyndall Keller and Willa Albrecht. I didn't know who Albrecht was, but she really stood out. Wonder why she didn't stick in Missoula. She's a very good player.

Be prepared to be frustrated with Binford as she runs players in and out with no rhyme or reason. It's what she does early in the season. Expect the lineup and rotations to solidify-maybe by mid-January. There's a lot of depth on this team, but the youngsters will be inconsistent.

Do you really believe Binford runs players in and out with no rhyme or reason. As a coach Binford seems pretty deliberate and I think she always shows she has a game plan. Maybe the plan doesn't work, but there always seems to be a game plan. I think she uses preseason games as a way to see how different rotations work together. How the girls communicate with each other and how they play off each other each other. As a fan I enjoy seeing different lineups play and watch the differences.

Also, I think given her plans, she will have the lineup and rotations figured out prior to conference play, so by the end of December.
I am super impressed with the freshman class. I always look to see freshman red shirted, and honestly I'm not sure any of them will get a red shirt. There is a ton of talent there and I'm guessing their play will strengthen through every game. it wouldn't surprise me to see them be relatively consistent by conference time.

Which ultimately leaves us incredibly deep. With the return of Taylor and Lexi we just get better. This is a team that has Big Sky Championship well within reach. Guess it just leaves the season to be played! But it's gonna be fun!

I believe Binford goes into these games, especially early in the season, with a scripted allotment of minutes to be played for each player. Grace Beasley alluded to it in her not so flattering public exit interview a year and a half ago. It is impossible to quantify, but over the years of watching, it sure has frustrated me how often a player, seemingly having a great turn on the floor or the “hot hand”, gets rotated out.

Thank you for clarifying. That's what I was talking about. Of course Binford knows what she's doing and has a plan, but every early season we regular posters on this page complain about her substitution patterns early in the season (including me). It's as predictable as Thanksgiving!

Perhaps, but I sure don't mind a hot handed player getting subbed out during the preseason games near as much as it bothers me during the conference games!

Picton has played quite a bit tonight against Chadron State and seems to be healthy. Deden and Janssen are both out to start the year but should be back by the time conference play starts.

Thanks.

I am watching tonight on Plus and it's nice watching the Cats play. The international experience with Bunyan and Dykatra should be a huge positive, and Morales is clearly a downhill scoring threat every time she touches the ball. Bunyan may be our most underrated player at the moment. This should be a very, very good basketball team.
