Last night after I got home from the women's win over SD I watched the highlights of the Duke-Auburn men's game at Cameron.
It got me to thinking about the support that basketball receives on most college campuses. Here at MSU we have a three time
Big Sky men's champion and a top contending women's team. The students for the most part support MSU football. Why don't they
support basketball? It seems to me that basketball is well supported on the high school level around the state. MSU has over 17,000
students on campus. Why the lack of support?

Re: Student Support
Because basketball isn't anywhere near the social event that football games are, and right now most students and fans in general are still way more interested in the football playoffs than paying attention to basketball yet. Student attendance is in decline all over the place - the Griz even did a promotion last night to buy a free beer for the first 100 students (21+) to show up for their game against SDSU.aucat wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 10:17 amLast night after I got home from the women's win over SD I watched the highlights of the Duke-Auburn men's game at Cameron.

I think it's also hard because Bobcat basketball is not relevant at the national level the way they Bobcat football is.

Re: Student Support
MSU basketball was very popular when I was in school in the late 80s and drew really good crowds for most games (there was no curtaining off half the Brick). The team was very good, and the football team was very bad. Perhaps having a bad football team pushed support towards basketball? Not sure.

Lower drinking age, easier to pregame, head to fieldhouse and have some fun. Also students want to be part of an event. BB crowds are average and don't get into it as much, so experience isn't as fun. Maybe need some competition. Between dorms (split by floors), fraternities, sororities? Sit in different sections and compete for loudest, craziest, best costumes, etc. Change that for each game. Winning group gets pizza party, or Taco party or something. Get business to sponsor.91catAlum wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 11:35 amMSU basketball was very popular when I was in school in the late 80s and drew really good crowds for most games (there was no curtaining off half the Brick). Well, I'm just different I guess. I was always a gym rat. Loved playing the game and now I love watching it. WHen I was in college I didn't miss a home game.RickRund wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 2:52 pmFully agree.....
