Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
I have it on multiple sources that Cincinnati associate HC Larry Davis is interviewing today for the coaching job. Davis is also the former head coach at Furman from 1996 to 2007 where he had a 124-139 record he also was an assistant at Minnesota, Ball State Wake Forest and Delaware.
Montana State has received over 90 applicants for the position and interviews are taking place this week.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
I did not have an opinion on this Bone guy till this person's post. Basically if we were to beg this guy to come here, he might be interested. Now I'm with mslacat, save everybody the time and tell the guy to get lost if this guy is to be believed. Anybody that needs to be asked to apply thinks that they are pretty special. Best of luck somewhere else.EssaBeast wrote:Hello Beautiful Bozeman,
I have it from a reliable source that Bone would be interested in living and coaching in Bozeman. But, he has NOT been contacted.
He is a good coach and should be considered.

I know nothing about this guy, but watching Bearcat basketball is a brutal experience. If they can't recruit anyone who can score to Cincinnati, He isn't going to be able to do it in Bozeman. They play uglier basketball than MSU has.mslacat wrote:I have it on multiple sources that Cincinnati associate HC Larry Davis is interviewing today for the coaching job. Not excited about Cincinnati guy. TJ sounds like a good choice. Young, somewhat unproven but looks like he can recruit. We need an up and comer to revive MSU bball, even if he only stays for 3 years.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
I will be sorely disappointed if TJ doesn't get the job.
Who wants to start doing bets?
I've got 3:1 that TJ gets the job! Place your bets now!

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

I continue to hear from multiple sources outside the program that Steve McClain currently an Assistant at Indiana is prime target , but I can not confirm he has been invited for an interview.

Ryan Miller would get be the best choice for MSU. He'd be able to get players, get them to buy into his system and develop them into a championship level team. MSU is a great place and should be able to get players but they need a coach who can get talented guys and then get the most out them. Individual skill development is Miller's specialty and he'd be able to get guys that could score.

I think you don't get it. Sleeping in until 6 won't get many people very far in life, especially if they want to play on Sunday.

I like him a lot but I think MSU needs a coach who's a little younger.mslacat wrote:I continue to hear from multiple sources outside the program that Steve McClain currently an Assistant at Indiana is prime target , but I can not confirm he has been invited for an interview.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
Confirmed that Utah assistants Tom Connor and Andy Hill both applied. I don't think either will be finalists. I also know that Ken Bone asked John Johnson, associated athletic director at Washington State and former Montana State football player, about the opportunity in Bozeman to gage if it would be a good fit. Sounds like he decided it wouldn't be.
I don't know much else. It's pretty quiet on all fronts. I only know the Utah assistants and the Johnson blurb because all have Montana connections. Unfortunately, I don't have many connections to Washington hoops or Iowa State hoops for that matter.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
Connor is the son of a coach. His dad was Boise State's head coach a long time ago. He was an assistant at Utah on the Keith Van Horn Andre Miller team that made it to the final game. He had a good run as the head guy at Westminister and has been with Krysko the last couple of years at Utah. They inherited a big mess and had a winning season and went to the NIT this year.

Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
Interesting! I heard from a source and confirmed by another that MSU contacted both Connor and Hill about applying for the job and both turned the oppertunity. As the story goes Fields was particularly interested in Connor. No saying I am right but just thought I would let you know what I heard. My info on Bone pretty much matches your.Colter_Nuanez wrote:Confirmed that Utah assistants Tom Connor and Andy Hill both applied. I don't think either will be finalists. Re: New Coach: Throwing names out
I have it on good authority that New Mexico Associate Head Coach Lamont Smith has been invited to interview for the coaching position. When I ran his name by a couple people I know in the coaching business (as I have done with a few candidates) both have essentially said "Hire him NOW". Mr. Smith has made it on my "I am very intrigued" list.

Just curious as to why he is the best candidate? I am biased towards Miller and truly believe he is the best candidate especailly looking at his resume. He has worked for some of the best coaches in college basketball Calipari, Alford, Haith.....What has Smith done that proves he is the best? The team he came to in New Mexico was recruited by Miller....especially the 2 from Australia. We have had a few studs (Al Beye, Damir Latovic) that were from overseas and I like the potential of that. I personally would like to see someone who comes in here and eventually moves on to bigger and better because they have turned the MSU program into something special.
