Re: Cats vs Griz
The Cats are playing like they are in a 5th grade shoot around contest.
The Griz are playing like they actually want to win the game.

Re: Cats vs Griz
We are not that good tonight. We don't have any big men to dominate in this league.

If it weren't for Qvale, Cherry and Steward we'd be right in this thing.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Re: Cats vs Griz
I hate to ask this question, but is anybody really, truly surprised by this? If you make an honest assessment of the Cats season so far, it's a minor miracle we were 5-1 in conference play coming into this game. Almost every game, we dig ourselves a hole early and then spend the rest of the game trying to claw our way back. You cannot do that against a very good UM team. We are near the bottom of the conference in almost every statistical category. My 5th grade travel b-ball team shoots free throws better than the Cats, and the Cats have very little for an inside game. All we do is shoot from 3-point range, and if we're off, forget about it. Top that with the fact that both Howard and Piepoli have really struggled most of the season and that we are so much smaller than Griz at every position and it just spelled disaster for tonight's outcome. I may be a Debbie Downer, but I just did not have much hope for a Bobcat "W" this evening.

Re: Cats vs Griz
The result doesn't surprise me. What was so frustrating is that the Cats looked like they didn't realize they were even playing basketball for the first 10 minutes of the game and once the Griz jumped out there was no way they were coming back. Bobby has been out of sync all season long.
To me this all comes down to recruiting and then developing those recruits.
The women's team was in total disarray when Coach Binford was brought in but she has been able to consistently recruit one of the best pure scorer's in Mercer and now Bussey, Balien has been one of the best all around post players in the Big Sky since she came in, and generally her teams have had balanced scoring since the get go. The girls team is actually playing like a team.
The men's team just flat looked lost and borderline pathetic in their play and effort.

Must have been in the second half. Didn't even see him in the first half.Gus wrote:Danny P had a good game... played bad and lost by 13...
The problem with Howard is that he has reverted back into shooting a lot of 3's, like he did his sophomore season. His FG% is way down from last year because of this. If he would concentrate on being a power forward and using his skill more on the low blocks, this team would be better. Of course, that is really hard to do against the Griz, as he is giving up 5" to Slevig. When was the last time MSU had a 6'10"+ center and a 6'8"+ PF? 1996?

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Re: Cats vs Griz
Not a surprise, but not hopeless.
We shot our worst percentage and had our worst turnover total yet.
Increase our shooting percentage and turnovers to OUR average and it's a ballgame.
Next week will be a different tale.
It didn't look like Huse trusted our normal rotation in this one.
Win in the Idaho and come back home for redemption.
Bright side: Free throws were better.

I agree alasax. I expected the FG pct to be down, but didn't see the TOs coming. UM is good, no doubt, but MSU should be more competitive with them than that. The start of the game killed the Cats.
I don't like the practically back to back games vs the same team. It doesn't allow for any evolution. I see the ladies are doing the same thing. The women also play EWU and PSU back to back the last four games of the regular season. That's very weak. I imagine there is some logical explanation for this.

Re: Cats vs Griz
I think that former Weber State coach Joe Cravens had the best explanation about the Big Sky Schedule. It was drawn up on a cocktail napkin. The Cats and the Griz will know what to expect from each other, and the Cats know what it will take to beat the Grizzlies on Saturday. Back to back games with a team is not a great idea. For some years, Weber State and Idaho State would play each other on a Thursday-Saturday alignment. That seems to be worse than back to back Saturdays, but it would be nice if Cat-Griz happened once at the middle point of the season and the final conference game of the season.TomCat88 wrote:I agree alasax. Re: Cats vs Griz
Seriously, get some players taller than 6'6 to defend in the post! There are 7 continents on this earth, there has got to be numerous players in this world that have some BB skills to play at MSU. I've heard several people say it difficult for MSU to recruit players including "big men."
Somebody help me here, I don't get it! Are academic standards too high, what is it? I think there are 3 maybe 4 players on this team that are D1 players the rest I'm not so sure. Should I just be happy with 15-16 win seasons?

You picked the Cats to lose by 15-20. So, they actually played better than you thought they would.

Re: Cats vs Griz
The Cats tried repeateedly to take the ball inside against the Griz but were mugged each time they tried. Not all of the defensive plays were blocks but the refs didn't call too many fouls on the inside.... when someone touched somebody around the perimeter they called every one.
