Re: UND
North Dakota played extremely well. Their big guys were in foul trouble and Huff didn't have his usual production, but that point guard of theirs killed us.
We got out rebounded badly by a poor rebounding team and we missed way too many free throws. If we ride Flavian Davis like that, and he played great, we have to expect a lot of missed free throws. And Egwuonwu is just too inconsistent. We needed something out of either Brown or Coleman-but neither did anything.
Now we go on the road to Weber and ISU. It's going to be pretty hard to bounce back from this one on that road trip.

Or a better reason to believe in Huse than his history of below-average teams and the first five games of this season. I am reserving my judgment on this team, but I can hardly blame a pessimist for being pessimistic about this program.Common Cat wrote:you need a hugCatBlitz wrote:I'm sure you are. Re: UND
Well, I guess I've been bragging on the Cats too much. The thing that I always look at is the space between our players and their players.
Because it's all about D and effort. For a good portion of the game I saw space when their guys had the ball, yet when our guys had
the ball ND was all over us. Bottom line, for the majority of the game, it appeared to me that ND wanted the game more than we did.
Every phase of the game: D, O, effort, FT shooting, ND topped us. After ND got up about 10 or 11 it seemed that MSU really started
to perform to their capability and dang near pulled it out.
The thing that hurt was the fact that we had a really big crowd tonight. I don't know, if I was a player, my team was in 1st place, and I came out
on the court and saw such a large and enthusiastic home crowd, I would really want to get after their butts. Didn't happen. Weird.
I know the Big Sky is balanced this year, but if you want to contend you simply cannot lose at home. MSU went from 1st place to now tied for
4th place in BSC. NOW MSU has a very, very tough road trip. The loss tonight will come back to haunt MSU. Unless they can somehow
steal a huge upset out on the road.
Ladies on the other hand......for now......are taking care of business!!

Re: UND
Agreed...after beating NC by 15, I thought this team might be a legitimate BSC title contender, and maybe they still are. But you're right, a legit contender should never lose at home to a middle of the pack team. I'm not ready to bail on them yet...plenty of time for that when we get into the 2nd half of the conference schedule, but that was a really deflating loss, after the big win on Thursday night. It' will be tough to beat WSU on the road next weekend, although we played them as tough as anyone last season, but I certainly believe we have a shot to pick up a split by winning at ISU. It sounds like we just didn't have quite the same focus and intensity last night, as we had in our first 5 conference games. If so, that's very disappointing on the one hand. On the other hand though, hopefully they learned a lesson that will prevent that from happening again.aucat wrote:Well, I guess I've been bragging on the Cats too much. As for your comment that we had a "really big crowd", according to the game story in the Tribune, the official attendance was only 2,700. Is that what passes for a really big crowd these days?

Re: UND
Sadly, yes. They have curtains up now so that only the lower level and about the top 4-5 rows of the second level of seating are available. This does a nice job of concentrating the crowd around the court, but also speaks to the plummeting attendance in the past ten years or so. This was the biggest crowd of the year - it's unfortunate they lost, as it wasn't exactly a performance that will encourage folks who were attending their first game of the year to come back for more.John K wrote:

Re: UND
Another factor about the crowd, there was no price discount for this game as there have been for almost
all the other games. Tickets for the UNC game were only 4 bucks, for example. Yet last night 12 or 15. No "bring in last game ticket
or women's ticket and you get in free" deals.
Yet, this was indeed the biggest crowd yet. Sort of proves that gimmicks don't bring in the crowd. Good ole-fashioned winning
and contending for championships does. Both hoops and football. If the football team started having losing seasons and never
competing for the conference championships, we would stop seeing Bobcat Stadium packed. That's the way it works.
Although I have to say, it is fun to have one gimmick back---- the "blimp" floating around the court dropping coupons again. Used to be
Wheat Montana now it's GVM (Gallatin Valley Mall).
Also, if you haven't been out to see a hoops game, the MSU pep band does an absolute fantastic job. They are loud and can flat-out play!

I agree. The band is terrific this season-best ever.aucat wrote: Also, if you haven't been out to see a hoops game, the MSU pep band does an absolute fantastic job. They are loud and can flat-out play!
The booster section was pretty full. The student section was maybe 1/4 full and I would guess that half the people sitting in the student section aren't students-and the ticket gimmicks won't make any difference with them. The only way to get more students to the game is to win more...lots more.
I'm interested to see what they come up with for an arena configuration after this season. The space will be closed this spring for a renovation-even Bozeman High's graduation has to be relocated. I'm sure the new seating capacity will be much smaller.

Re: UND
As one who has seen almost every mens BB game since 1957 I've got to say that this team is probably one of the most talented teams and the most unselfish team Huse has ever had !! The UND game went down to the wire and if just 1 or 2 of the more obvious calls would have gone our way (or 1 more foul shot) we'd have gone into overtime with a good chance of being no.1 at 5 and 1. The first half was mediocre but once we went to a zone in the second half we shut down a definitely underrated UND team. If you haven't seen this team play you are missing out on some really entertaining BB. The No. Colorado and No. Arizona games were 2 of the best games I've seen in a long time. My advice to some of you more vocal " downer" local posters is quit listening on the radio and come watch a game or two, you just might be surprised at how much Huse has changed his (and the teams) attitude. Notice that no one quit this year ? Lastly, when losing 1 game drops you from 1st to 4th that tells you just how balanced this league is this year! GO CATS!!!!!!

Re: UND
I'll be the first to admit I'm a downer about this program right now, but some of us can't just "come watch a game or two". Trust me, I'd love to see this "new and improved" Bobcats MBB team in person, but it hasn't worked into my schedule. Until then I'll rely on the radio and BN. All signs point to good things happening so far this season, but until they finally win more games than they lose in Feb/March (or second time through the BSC schedule), I'm still very much a downer. Been down this road too many times to get my hopes up much.desmond1957 wrote:As one who has seen almost every mens BB game since 1957 I've got to say that this team is probably one of the most talented teams and the most unselfish team Huse has ever had !! Re: UND
Actually, dropping from 1st to 4th after losing one game is simply a result of it still being so early in the season, and not necessarily an indication that the BSC is unusually balanced. When teams have only played 5-6 games so far (less than a third of the conference schedule), it's pretty easy to fall several spots in the standings with a single loss. Although I agree that it seems like the league will be more balanced than the last couple of years, when UM and WSU were so dominant. UM only lost two 2 conference games in the last two seasons combined, and now they've already lost 4 through the first three weeks of this season.desmond1957 wrote:As one who has seen almost every mens BB game since 1957 I've got to say that this team is probably one of the most talented teams and the most unselfish team Huse has ever had !! Definitely a disappointing loss. I will get to see the team play in person at Weber St. I believe we will play well and that we could steal one here. Weber seems to be struggling a bit and they should be easy to get up for due to their last few years dominating the league. Go Cats.

The other reason is that UND came out desperate, and hotter than a pistol. The teams went back and forth for most of the game. In the end it was our free throw shooting that did us in.aucat wrote:Well, I guess I've been bragging on the Cats too much.
