Here is a serious name. I did not come up with this one on my own (but I should have) a friend mentioned this on to me. Pryor Orser currently coaching at the Colorado School of Mines, a Montana native and played for MSU -Billing

Orser would be good. Another west coast name is the Cal Baptist head coach. He was 24-4 this year 18-2 in his league was 80-22 as an assist at St. Marys and they had a lot of success and was 130-55 as a JC head coach in So Cal. He's had success at the JC and D-2 level as a head guy and helped get the pipeline into St. Mary's as an assistant.

You should also start a thread called "no brainer" and maybe one called "basketball no brainer"

Strong candidate? Yes. No brainer? No. Most people around Bozeman thought Huse was a no brainer choice the last time, and it didn't turn out so well.

Sprinkle is a definitely a name to think of. He is a D-1 assistant coach who is know as an ace recruiter. He has MSU ties as both a player and coach. I know he would love the job. On the down side the teams he has been associated with the past few years (Cal Sta Fullerton and Cal State Northridge) have not had stellar records and that will hurt him.

After talking to a fair number of people both in Bozeman and around the coaching circles, there is a strong feeling out there that Fields maybe looking for a coach with no ties to MSU. Someone who can come in with a fresh approach and clear mind as to where the program should go. Think of it as the Rob Ash for the basketball program.

Ryan Looney at Seattle Pacific University would be a great hire. Saw him speak at the coaching clinic in Great Falls.

Saw someone post Doug Gotlieb's name earlier. He won't leave his CBS job but his brother Gregg is an assistant at San Diego State. I have enjoyed watching this program grow. In fact because of the struggles of the Cats they have become my de facto favorite team. Gregg would be a great candidate. He has been on a staff that has gotten over looked players and built players out of fringe prospects plus he is young but has a name with his family ties.

Todd Lickliter, he won the national coach of the year at butler in 07 then had kind of a rough patch at Iowa but has had good success at NAIA Marian. Sounds like he wants to get back into D 1 coaching sounds like a good fit to me.

Here are the names I have heard that have either been contacted by MSU or have contacted MSU with a very strong interst.

Ken Bone formerly HC at Boise State and recently fire as head coach of Washington State
T.J. Otzelberge current assistant coach at U of Washington
Steve McClain former Wyoming head coach and current assistant at Indiana
Greg Graham former Boise State HC and current Assistant at Bradley
Charlie Parker former HC at Wyane State (1982-1988), assistant at USC (1990-1998), assistant for the NBA Mavericks and hornet during the 2000's (don't know what he is doing now)

From multiple sources the name to keep an eye on is T.J. Otzelberge. Ken Bone is also being mentioned as a strong candidate. You also have to wonder about Charlie Parker who it sounds like he already has an interview.

Out of those I really like Otzelberger and McClain. Parker is really interesting. I'd say a firm "no" to Bone.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

Other than they APR thing, what don't people like about Bone. The Portland APR mess seems to have been from the era when teams were just finding out about how it worked (it seems quite a few teams had early APR problems including our football). Does he not stress academics? Why the dislike? I don't follow much of this stuff, so I'm not an advocate just curious.

I have heard the word abrasive used to describe him.

Talking to my WSU friends, they said everyone lost faith in him, and the fans rebelled and wanted him out. The players would not play hard for him down the stretch (this is what the fans were saying) and that he came across as arrogant and combative towards the boosters.

I never liked him at Portland St. Just being a fan I found him arrogant and just simply not likable. As for the APR thing, I can't believe Fields is considering him honestly. Fields seems to be an APR nazi with no tolerance for past or potential future error.

From having lived in Boise during the Greg Graham years, I say DEAR GOD NO to him. He was awful. His style of play is slower and more boring than Coach Huse's, which is no small feat.
