I think every player comes from a different background and will have different priorities and needs that will factor into the decision to stay or transfer. Even if a player isn't good enough to get a big NIL deal I'm sure there are cases in which even a few thousand dollars would be quite attractive as that can help pay for a few months of rent or a year of car payments. And it gets more attractive if you're going somewhere that isn't quite as expensive to live as Bozeman has become. If a player is motivated primarily by money (and not all of them are) then yeah, MSU probably isn't going to be able to retain them unless the player simply isn't good enough to get those NIL offers from other schools.msu_agfan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 25, 2025 6:55 amNo disrespect to Bryce at all.. He was welcomed and he was a good addition, even somewhat desperately needed at his position. But, he doesnt seem to be an elite or upper echelon type player. I feel this doesnt bode well for our school or conference. Only way to keep average type players is to have a nice NIL deal for them? We are out then right? What am I missing?

Re: Portal Begins (MBB)
He says it's about the money. This is what Charles Barkley was talking about not long ago when he said that the NIL was basically going to create about a 25 school league that can afford to buy players. Very little hope for "cinderella teams" going forward. But what truly concerns me is this: what if you have a super rich person who wants to pump a ton of money into one of the "non top 25" schools? Like, say, the University of Montana? I think we are aware of a certain person who is extremely wealthy and has donated a ton of money to UM. There are many problems with NIL but I think one of the most serious is the fact that it's all secret regarding who is making contributions and how much.
I have wondered just how sustainable NIL is because the NIL contributions are NOT tax deductable, and just because someone sends in a huge donation doesn't guarantee that the team will win or even compete for a championship. I have wondered what it does to team chemistry. But the thing that concerns me the most is the fact that ONE person with incredible wealth could make such an impact on his/her favorite team.

Re: Portal Begins (MBB)
Once the new Revenue Sharing system starts over the summer and the schools are allowed to pay players directly in addition to outside NIL deals, the rich will get even richer in terms of the ability to "buy" the best players. Even including hypothetical ultra-wealthy individual donors, no team in the Big Sky is going to be able to compete with the larger conference schools and what they're going to be able to offer.aucat wrote: ↑Tue Mar 25, 2025 8:57 amHe says it's about the money. NAU is getting absolutely decimated by the portal yet again. Carson Towt is the latest entry, MSU will be happy to see the back of him although Towt will probably somehow manage to grab a few more rebounds against MSU on his way out the door.

Maybe he comes here to solve our rebounding problem.
While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

Yup, develop a better NIL deal than the Cats already have. Money talks. College sports is now pay for play.msu_agfan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 25, 2025 6:55 amNo disrespect to Bryce at all.. Well, maybe if we're lucky the student manager will decide to return for next season.

I think to make us feel better you also need to officially announce that you will NOT be entering the announcer portal.

Very true, I'm just wondering at this point if MSU (men's) will have any of those to make it if we'll have to settle for the TV announcer.

Trap Johnson leaving is a little concerning to me. It’s not like he showed anything to be getting a better offer. Hopefully it’s a case of just not like Bozeman/Montana rather than anything else.

Not like Bozeman, MT?! Sure doesn’t seem to be the trend these days.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Tue Mar 25, 2025 6:58 pmTrap Johnson leaving is a little concerning to me. Hopefully Logie can catch lightning in a bottle next season.
Did benching Walker damage the core fabric of the team?

There’s always going to be athletes that come here and realize they don’t like the place that much.Bocephus wrote: ↑Tue Mar 25, 2025 7:59 pmNot like Bozeman, MT?! Sure but with 6 graduates and 3 older guys in portal it seems like a high recruit would figure it would be their time. Stay a year, show your stuff, better offers the next year if you choose. Just surprising how many across college don't like the place they chose, year after year.
