kral and shann ferch
Check out the story on the Ferch's. The whole video is worth the watch. All I can say is incredible. Two of our very best students-athletes. Boy, have we done a disservice not highlighting the careers of these two.

I miss those days. Those were fun games to watch. I wish we had those kind of players today. The fieldhouse would be packed.

Yeah, I don't think anybody on this board has overlooked the careers of these guys ... they are legends in the minds of most of us.
I understand that Shann is quite an amazing writer these days as well (I believe he writes under a psuedonym instead of his real name) ... lots of talent in that family.

Re: kral and shann ferch
I'd certainly call their careers a highlight, for the whole state of Montana as well as for MSU. They came along when the Bobcat basketball program needed, and got, a big boost. I remember gathering in a bar with a bunch of my Griz buddies to cheer for the Cats against St. John's. Anyone who doesn't remember what a bad ass Walter Berry was should research it to fully appreciate what Ferch, Greg Walter, and company did against St. John's that night.cats2506 wrote:I guess to a griz fan it might look like their carrears have NOT been a highlightpete wrote:Check out the story on the Ferch's. Re: kral and shann ferch
I had the privilege of being at MSU during Kral and Shann's playing days. They were awesome to watch. Kral was money when the game was on the line. Didn't miss many Cat roundball games in those days.
The game against St Johns and Walter Berry was great. The Big Sky had started using the 3 point shot that year and we had excellent shooters on that team. The tournament didn't have the 3 point play yet. I think we only lost by 4 or 5 points. We might have pulled off the upset with the 3 point play...Who knows????

Best team ever was Kral, Tommy Domako, Tony Hampton, Ray Willis, Greg Walter (no match for Berry) and Shan and a few others off the bench. Kral was high flying ridiculous, Domako was deadly from distance, Tony was the best point guard we ever had and Ray was a great shooting/all around guard and a sick defender. Acenter on that team would have been sweet.

Great post. I remember those guys. Kral and Shan, obviously. My recollection of Damako is he was deadly from a distance, like you say, but unusually tall for a long bomber. Hampton and Willis ... great players ... Hampton a little ball handler and steal artist, kind of a spark plug. One of them, Hampton or Willis, was from Texas if I'm not mistaken. Walter ... was he Canadian? He had about a size 22 shoe.GFCatFan wrote:Best team ever was Kral, Tommy Domako, Tony Hampton, Ray Willis, Greg Walter (no match for Berry) and Shan and a few others off the bench. I was in school the years the Ferch boys played as well. Used to be a packed house with Park County packing the arena every night they played. Those were fun hoops years with great players and teams. The atmosphere was different at games in the mid / late 80's - way more students attended the games. My buddies and I used to joke Tom's name was Amako - meaning no "D" in Tom's name - in reference to him bombing away long balls on one end, then getting burned on "D" on the other end. We used to have a lot of fun at those games. I used to play a lot of noon ball at the PE complex with Tom Ferch. He could stroke it as well - great guy and great coach. Fun to think back and reflect on some great years as MSU.

Another university in the state, a couple hundred miles west of Bozeman, is having the same problem with dwindling student attendenc at BB games.griztasteslikechicken wrote:I was in school the years the Ferch boys played as well. I will defend myself "a little" by saying that a little known fact is that I am within MSU's top 10 in steals for a career. of position for 3 of my 4 years guarding a power forward that usually outweighed me by 25-40 pounds every night. It must have been
fun watching from the cheap seats, but I'm sure I had more fun.

Wasn't Kral's first offensive play in his first game as an MSU freshman a dunk? I was at the game. Maybe I'm remembering it better than it was . . .

Just ribbing you a little Tom. I know you read and post on BN so thought I'd just throw a right at you. You were a great player and fun to watch. I loved going to games when I was at MSU. Hope we gave the opposition some crap for you from the cheap seats. Ta-Ta..

Re: kral and shann ferch
I was just giving you a smack down for fun. I like remembering the "good old days" especially after I watched the Cat/Griz game in Missoula last weekend. The place was empty and the play was pretty bad. I was asking my wife where my jersey was and she asked me if the new jerseys came with an oxygen tank attachment. Besides that, if I put on my old basketball shorts, I might get arrested for indecent exposure.
