Next season's recruits-Calling Mslacat

The above video is a highlight reel for Jamie Stewart who comes from the same town in Michigan as Tom Domako. This video is from his freshman year at Henry Ford JC. I've read that he's put on about 15 pounds of muscle since then. He goes about 6'3" or 6'4". Of course highlight reels can make anybody look all-world, but he looks like a real good player to me.
Our other JC recruit is Mohamed Fall from Senegal by way of Cloud County CC in Kansas. He's listed at 6'8" so he'll be 6'9" for us (and probably is really 6'7") and about 230 lbs. I haven't seen a video of him or many stats. Seems to me he's somewhere around a 15 point 10 rebound a game guy this season.
Maybe Mslacat can give us some details-I'm sure he's following these guys.

Re: Next season's recruits-Calling Mslacat
I don't follow MSU basketball nearly as closely as football, so this question is for those that do. What are the prospects for some of the current and incoming in-state players, such as Davis, Brumwell, and Little? It seems that most fans don't believe any of them are likely to be impact players. With Howard being gone next year, will there be any Montana natives making a significant contibution to the team in the next couple of seasons? Are there any current high school players with D-! potential? The days when we used to have two or three Montanans in the starting lineup sort of seems like a bygone era. Does that have something to do with the dropoff in fan interest and support for MBB?

That's a good question. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Selvig and Howard the only two Montana players getting regular time on the Cats and griz?John K wrote:I don't follow MSU basketball nearly as closely as football, so this question is for those that do. Maybe these things go in cycles.
Whatever happened to Colt Idol? Kid from Whitefish who got hurt before last season?
Didn't Bozeman's center Lincoln Powers eat up Little that last time they played?
Who knows?

Yes, Howard and Selvig are the only players getting playing time for MSU or UM. In fact, I believe Selvig is the only Montanan on UM's roster. I don't believe Colt Idol is still in the program. I thought I read last spring that he had left the team....not sure if this was due to his injury or other reasons. I don't know about Powers vs. Little, but it does seem odd that we've picked up two players from Skyview in the past couple of years. They haven't exactly been a power in Class AA, compared to Bozeman, CMR and West. It seems you'd be more likely to find D-I talent from one of those programs, versus Skyview. I understand that you can sometimes find talented players on mediocre teams, but it's just hard for me to imagine that Davis and Little are the best that AA has had to offer in the past few years. Has anyone besides Huestis signed with out of state D-I programs recently?

Re: Next season's recruits-Calling Mslacat
i think it has more to do with the evolution of the game itself in my opinion. Teams across the country are getting better and better. you still have your elite conferences but mid majors and low mid-majors like the big sky are getting real talented guys too. before, teams like um and msu could reach for players in the state because there was not much risk to it. guys like warhank, camel, hatler, lazosky, criswell, faaborg, dissly, riddle, durr, etc. all had very great highschool careers and basically got their pick of either the cats or griz amongst other schools. of those nine guys i listed i think maybe only 4-5 of them were legitimate division one players. but all did ok playing in the big sky....but the big sky is getting tougher. i think this is a trend that will continue and we'll probably only see about one player a year playing at this level.

Re: Next season's recruits-Calling Mslacat
mslacat has said in the past that when the number of scholorships for the men was cut to 13 the coaches felt like they could not roll the dice on marginal/project type in-state kids. Seems like Huse is a little more concerned with having MT kids on ther roster than Tinkle is, but that might not be a good thing as I think the past few have been a reach. Personally, I am an in-state homer, so I am comfortable with them making a little stretch to give a MT kid a chance even if it costs a bit in the win colum. That stance probably isn't for most, just the way i feel.
As for Colt Idol, he tranfered to Carroll but I believe he had to give up playing ball because the knee (?) was never going to be right and he didn't want to risk permanant damage.

Re: Next season's recruits-Calling Mslacat
I understand what you're saying about the reduced scholarships, and that's probably true at least to some degreee. But many of the Montana kids who played on some of MSU's best teams in the past, were not "marginal" players....they were all-BSC players, or at the very least they were 2 or 3-year starters for us. I'm talking about everyone from Doug Hashley, to the Ferch brothers, to Scott Hatler, Danny Sprinkle, Adam Leachman, and Dan Sullivan from the 1996 team. There's a bunch of others too, but those are the names that I thought of just off the top of my head.c.falls cat wrote:mslacat has said in the past that when the number of scholorships for the men was cut to 13 the coaches felt like they could not roll the dice on marginal/project type in-state kids. Other than Reid....where is our scoring going to come from next year? We lose a penetrator/slasher in Rush and an inside/outside threat in Bobby Howard. Are we going to shoot threes and hope Johnson and Anderson can get some offensive rebounds?

We're not going to be good until we start getting tall guys in our front court.
Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

That is pretty much what we have been playing this year (except for the few Rush slashes inside). No medium range game at all.Helcat72 wrote:Other than Reid....where is our scoring going to come from next year? We lose a penetrator/slasher in Rush and an inside/outside threat in Bobby Howard. Re: Next season's recruits-Calling Mslacat
true , but at least Bobby tries to give us an inside game and can get a few things done against the smaller teams. Bigger ones just frustrate him because they just swat his layups down. I don't see anyone doing that next year.CARDIAC_CATS wrote:That is pretty much what we have been playing this year (except for the few Rush slashes inside). The cats are just struggling right now but I think they have definatly found something last game in Tre Johnson he could help them the rest of the year. As for the recruits Jamie Stewert is a very athletic kid. But really I think between Reid, McCall, Anderson, and redshirt Mcintyre the cats backcourt will be alright. Reid is just a flatout scorer and if he can handle the ball a bit better he could be a force. McCall is flashy but seems to be a pretty good ball handler that can set others up. Tor Anderson Im not really sure what to think yet but he seems like just a solid player. From what it sounds like if mcintyre can get his ass too put on some weight he will really help this team shooting the ball, one of my best friends is a coach in spokane an says his range is ridiculous and he might be the most consistent 3pt shooter hes seen in the GSL could help because god knows our 3pt shooting is horrible.. But I think this team will win out then have a chance at making a run in the Big Sky tment. Rush and Hotrod will figure out ways to win for this team. Im excited to see what happens.

i hope the kid from Michigan is good and hopefully they sign a couple more all big sky players or we are in deep trouble again for next couple years! i dont see how its gonna get better to be honest. i come to the games and wonder how we will win 10 games next year? We will be really young next year and the Griz and Weber have alot of players back and they are way ahead of us in the talent category.. I really hope Reid can take his game to next level but we need all the returners to get way better. it seems like we haven't got anything out of the recruiting classes for past 2 years from a production standpoint? Since Huse got there the best players were all from Sprinkle, Orton, and Durden time as assts for him. Divaldo, Will bynum, Marquis Navarre, Carlos Taylor, Meclin Davis, Rush, Howard, Piepoli (who is gotten worse this year). Who have they brought in since they left that has been any good? I really like watching Shawn Reid and think he has a chance but who else? MSLACAT any news on anybody else we are recruiting that can come in and help next year?

I totall agree that we lost some REALLY good assistants who were awesome recruiters.bobcat1984 wrote:i hope the kid from Michigan is good and hopefully they sign a couple more all big sky players or we are in deep trouble again for next couple years! i dont see how its gonna get better to be honest. i come to the games and wonder how we will win 10 games next year? Re: Next season's recruits-Calling Mslacat
He's avoiding this board as much as possible (he even said as much somewhere, but I can't seem to find his post about it...) probably especially now that the MBB program is in such an uncontrolled downward spiral. He loves and follows MSU MBB more than any of us ever will, and I'm sure he'd just as soon not read the board right now (can't blame him).
