Huse & Pfeifer land a point guard

Post by mslacat » Thu Oct 06, 2011 7:33 pm

Marcus Cobert a 5-11 point guard from Post Falls idaho has committed to Montana State this evening, according multiple sources. Colbert is a former team mate of current Bobcat Shawn Reid where they won a state championship in 209-10 and 4th last year after being ranked #1 most of the year. Colbert took an official visit last week-end.
I have more on Colbert on my blog as well as here on Bobcat Nation.com. I will have more later

I have a family member who has watched this guys the past couple of years in Postfalls, and he said Marcus can really sky high for his size. Easily slam dunking over people. He is very smooth and can score and pass the ball equally well. He was looked at by many big sky schools as well as Idaho Vandals. Shawn Reid was a major factor in getting him to Mt. State. I think he is a very good prospect for the Cats. I hope the Cats do well this season and I hope interest picks up here in Bozeman, as I really like Brad Huse as a coach. I think we are a really good big man away from contending for the title. Who knows maybe this will be a breakout year.

Is it just me or do we only recruit point guards?

The next signie will be a big guy 6-8 or better.

I talked to Huse about recruiting 3-4 weeks ago and he said they were making a priority to sign a Big guy preferably from high school this year. He also said at that at the time, he had 2-3 point guard and small forward prospects that "we may not be able to pass on" if they commit. Huse did not of course give me any names (the Belecheck side of him and all) but I am quite certain Colbert was one of those guys.

You also need to keep in mind on the basketball court if you are short a center you can always play a power forward there. Shooting guard you can make do with a point guard or small forward. At the point guard spot, though if you have not got a stable of true points you are screwed. It has been proven over and over in the Big Sky that the smaller guards can be very effective scorers so it does not bother me having a few extra point guards if they can score the ball, and all of our points guards can.

The Bobcats have had at least 2 6-10 centers in for official visits so far this fall that I know of (I am pretty sure there was another big man on the list). Jake Belford from Battle Ground Washington who I hear may wait until the spring to sign (wants to play for Gonzaga) and Caleb Dressler from Evergreen HS in Vancouver Washington. Dressler surprised the heck out of me. He averaged 21 points 17 rebounds a game last year, three star rating from both Rivals and Scout and a 88 rating from ESPN. Big Sky school usually sign 1 star big men at best and hope they land a sleeper. Still remember, strange things happen to big men in the fall. Bigger schools will string along a handful of what they feel are lesser big men, not offering them but keeping in contact once or so a month. When all primary target are committed to other schools there is a rush by the WAC, Pac-12 MtW etc. to swoop down on Big Sky targets and romance them into signing. It happens every year breaking a lot of Big Sky coaches hearts. Funny thing is 1-2 years later those same big men are dumped by the school when they can actually sign one of those "higher target".

One other thing. Huse said even though typically every D-1 school will lose at least one under class-man to transfer each year, he will not over sign this fall as has become the custom of most upper end Big Sky schools. We have two seniors on the team so Huse said he will sign no more than 2 player this fall.

It has been brought to my attention that The recruitment of Marcus Cobert was primarily handled by Huse and Phiefer. It has been noted in this thread title and hats off to George for helping to secure his first recruit for the Bobcats.

It should be noted that in recruiting athletes especially basketball ALL the coaches take an active role in recruiting and ultimately signing athletes. While the head coach deservedly so get the credit or blame recruiting a lot of hard work by the assistants go into selling the program with usually one assistant taking the lead on a particular prospect when the head coach is busy either coaching, of being the figure head.

I heard the other day that Marcus hurt his shoulder pretty badly while playing football for Post Falls High. He's expected to be out until Jamuary for the Basketball team. I hope that doesn't hurt his signing status.

It shouldn't unless Huse and Co. think it's something that has long-term impact (I.e. anything torn or broken).
