WBB question

I noticed a new commit for the women http://msubobcats.com/news/2012/4/18/wb ... 20824.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but the article says that makes 5 signings and Binford's looking for 1 more. There are 11 on the roster. How many schollies does WBB get ?

answered my own question and it's 15.

They get 15. Katie Bussey is gone to graduation. Freshmen Destini French is under medical status, effectively ending her eligibility to play for MSU. Symone Brown left the program. Kate Webb is officially under medical status. Kelsey Roben as well.

That means MSU has the following scholarship players returning:

Seniors - Rachel Semansky, Latisha Adams
Juniors - Ashley Albert, Chelsea Banis, Ausha Cole, Emily Allen
Sophomores - Jackie Elliott, Kali Durham and Kayla DeWit (redshirted last year)

That's nine. With 15 schollies, they are bringing in:

- Alexa Dawkins, Bozeman
- Peyton Ferris, Twin Bridges
- Jasmine Hommes, Lynden Christian (Lynden, Wash.)
- Lindsay Stockton, Gonzaga Prep (Spokane)
and the newest MSU women's hoopster, Margreet Barhoum from Meadowland's High School in Edmonds, Wash.

Check out tomorrow's Chronicle for a story on Barhoum's commitment. Talked to her this evening and she is STOKED to come to Bozeman.

The above article explains what Roben, Webb and French will do to still be involved in the MSU women's program.

To my understanding, it's a loophole that lets the girls stay involved with the program and continue receiving aid of some sort, but they don't count against the scholarship limit.

The women's team gets such good grades — 10 of them were academic all-conference last season — that it wouldn't surprise me if the 15 active girls AND the medical status girls are all on nearly full scholarships, with a lot of the aid coming academically as well.

It's my understanding that D-I Basketball is an all or nothing sport with regard to scholarships. So all 15 active girls receiving scholarships will receive full scholarships.

I'm not sure how that works with the injured players. I'd imagine they would get a university fee waiver for working as an "intern" but I'm not sure if they would receive room and board money...perhaps it comes from the fast break club.

Not sure if same in basketball but in football if a person goes on medical they can stay on scholarship and not count against the scholarship limit but they are not eligble to return as a player (Ben T.)

We used to play basketball against Lynden Christian in high school, and usually got our asses handed to us by them. For some reason their men's and women's basketball teams were always stacked with talented athletes.

That's too bad about Roben, Webb and now Destini French. I would have liked to seen what French could have turned into as a player once she got healthy and in our system for a few years. She definitely could have developed into a force in the Big Sky.

I am stoked about the incoming class and it may be Binfords best yet. Got our true point guard in Stockton, two scoring guards in Ferris and Barhoum (who according Binford is used to double and triple teams and still putting up double figures). Jasmine Hommes seems to be between a cross of Strand and Semansky...hopefully a little more like Strand with her outside shooting.

My impression of Alexa Dawkins is that she is lot like Jackie Elliot...totally athletic and a great defensive player.

Great class...but the Big Sky is loaded and totally balanced. Either way, Coach Binford's teams are always fun to watch and easy to cheer for.

I've always thought that Binford has done a great job, both as a coach and as a recruiter. But I also believe that it's time for us to take the proverbial "next step" in WBB in the next couple of seasons. We've been knocking on the door the last few years, but the time has come for us to knock that door down and actually win the BSC. We have a lot of good players coming back, and seemingly some talented new players coming into the program, and I sort of feel like if not now...then when?

Be careful. Appearantly, admiring the female form is taboo on message boards because when posters appreciate the female form it can lead to football players acting inappropriately with females in the student body. At least that's what I was told on a thread on egriz last week.

if it helps, pass on this little tidbit to the griz players. it's most certainly ok to appreciate the female form. actually, it's strongly encouraged. however....it is not ok to rape the female form. this seems to be where the confusion lies so hopefully you can pass this on. normally i'm not one to help the griz do anything....but i consider this a service to the community.

appreciating = good.....
rape = bad.....

Not that I agree with that or anything. Basketball players aren't really my cup of tea, though.
