Montana State women's basketball coach Tricia Binford has concluded her 2011-12 recruiting class with the addition of Rechel Carter, a 5-8 guard from Foothill College in California. Carter will be a junior on next season's Bobcat squad.
A native of Vallejo, Calif., Carter played last season at Foothill and helped the Owls to a 30-5 overall mark. FC finished runner-up at the California state tournament, after winning the North Coast Conference and earning a No. 1 seed in the Nor-Cal.
For the season, Carter averaged 8.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. She hauled down 10 rebounds in the Owls' Sweet 16 win over Consumes River College. For her efforts, Carter was an all-league honorable mention pick and was named the team's defensive player of the year.
"Rechel's length and athleticism make her an extremely versatile defender capable of guarding any position on the perimeter,” said Foothill head coach Jody Craig. “In addition, her ability to see the floor, make good decisions and play at an up tempo pace I think will fit right in with Montana State's style of play."
Carter played her first year of collegiate basketball at San Joaquin Delta College, after prepping at Vallejo High School. At VHS, she averaged 14.7 points, while shooting 44 percent from the field. Carter led the Apache to the 2010 CIF SJS Division II title, notching 15 points and 15 rebounds in the championship game.
“She is absolutely relentless on the defensive end,” Binford said. “She goes non-stop and has the ability to raise the level of play of those around her. She is very athletic and quick and will fit in well with our up-tempo style.”
With the signing of Carter, Binford has completed the 2011-12 recruiting class with one junior college transfer and five high school standouts.
