Riverton 2013 guard Stephan Holm gets offer from UC-Davis
PREP SPORTS OVERTIME BY BILL ORAM AND KYLE GOON

This year, Utah Pump-N-Run 17-U may not have quite as many high-profile stars, but there's still some strong uncommitted talent on the roster.

The best of these just might be Stephan Holm, a 6-foot-3 guard from Riverton who has a strong shooting touch but also has the hops to throw down a nasty dunk. Division I schools are starting to notice the 2013 prospect's talent, and UC-Davis has now become the first to throw out a scholarship offer.

"This is the first year I've had multiple schools call me," says Holm, who is leading Pump-N-Run with more than 20 points per game in tournaments this spring. "It's just travelling, playing against some of the best competition."

Also in the mix, Holm says, is USC, Utah State, Utah and Nevada, but it could be some time before one of those schools makes an offer.

Holm averaged about 14 points for the Silverwolves last season, and played an important role in keying the team's semifinal run after Riverton entered the tournament as a No. 4 seed. He has solid shooting touch, and averaged about 1.8 long-range shots a game.

Holm said the biggest thing colleges are looking for him to improve is his defense.

"I've definitely had to work hard at that — defense and my middle game," he said. "They'll give it some time, and I'll wait until something happens."

Holm is not the only player brimming with potential on the roster. Kearns forward Dayon Goodman, a 6-foot-8 athlete with some raw talent and shotblocking ability, is drawing some Division I interest but still has schools in a holding patterns as he develops.

Coach Todd Phillips said 2012 forward Casey Oliverson is tentatively planning to go to SLCC in the fall, but still is open after having a strong spring. Sky View teammate Jalen Moore from the 2013 class is also a solid prospect, but has a ironclad commitment to Utah State. Orem stars Zach Hunsaker and Jordan Darger are on the roster but have been hampered by injury.

Spoke with Holm and his HS coach, Steve Galley. More later, but here's transcript of interviews.

HOLM
“The whole college-town atmosphere was a big part of it. I like the idea of being in a small town and the college-town atmosphere and being a Bobcat, you know?”
“I liked the idea of the mountains and staying in a small town.”
Came up a week ago, met players, coaches.
“I really like the team, I like the coaching staff. That was a big part of it.”
Decision done
“It’s a lot easier; just a lot of stress off my shoulders. I don’t have to stress at all or anything, I can go out and play.”
STEVE GALLEY
“Really happy for him. He’s worked hard and this has been a dream for him.”
“College most likely wasn’t – it was going to be a pretty tough prospect for him without a scholarship.”
“He is going to appreciate the opportunity that he is given.”
Discussed decision
“We’ve been working together on this. It’s been a challenge for him to make the deicision.”
One of the challenges. Single-parent home, mother. Dad passed away when he was little in plane crash.
“He’s really a down-to-earth kid. He’s not into the bright lights and the flash and lots of attention. He’s a quiet kid and just wants to play basketball and go to school.”
“He fell in love with Bozeman when he we went up on his visit. He loved the college feel and he’s an inter-Mountain West type of kid. He loves the geography. It’s a good fit.”
Liked UC-Riverside, came down to UC-Riverside and MSU. Seemed like good fit, opportunity to compete/have a chance to play

13-11, 5A semifinalists
14 ppg last season in No. 4 seed’s run to semis
Official offers: UC-Davis, UC-Riverside, MSU, ISU. Attention from Utah State, Utah, Nevada, USC, Pepperdine.
