Heard from some University of Utah folks/boosters that Huse's Montana State basketball team won its "secret" scrimmage against Utah last Saturday. The game was played at the Huntsman Center. No media members or fans are allowed to watch, but the results always seem to get out. Since my info was from Utah source not a lot to report on individual results but I am told our Guard/wing (1-3) out played Utah's and surprisingly our young/inexperienced post held their own against the Pac-12 team.

expect a quick start, then a fade to black.

Didn't supposedly beat Wyoming last year in one these secret games? And we did beat Utah last year in the regular season (though the Utes were terrible).
Our typical basketball season kind of resembles this video:

The 1500 people that still show up for the snoozefests in the Field House pretty much makes our games a secret doesn't it?

I have watched the Cats for years, going to multiple games a year from 1986 to present.(Even though I live in Utah.) I have been disappointed at times with the teams and their results. Having said this, I am saddened by some of you guys' attitude toward this years team. The negativity is old and stale. I give each group a clean slate and am hopeful that they will be a team that competes for the league championship. Most years they fall short but I do not believe that they mail anything in or give up. This leads me to respect them and their efforts. This includes the coaches and the players.

Good post. I'll add that if you know the coaches personally you would have a hard time writing some of the things that have been written. They work very hard to improve things and are very good guys. Do I agree with everything? No. Do I wish they were better? Yes. Am I sick of mediocrity? Absolutely. But I also know these guys care more than any of us and want it turned around.

Based upon the background of the kids here now, the comment from Huse about simplifying the offense and defense, it appears "up tempo" is what we can expect to see. I'll be one of the first to start yelling if we become a bunch of back door, pattern, half-court, sleep inducing, etc. teams. But...

Then you have to change some things. If you keep losing players and coaches, maybe you are doing something wrong. I'm sure they care, but if nothing changes then you keep getting the same results. Or should we be quiet and make no posts and just hope for the best?

I agree with you. I'm just saying that if you knew them personally I don't think you would put it on a public board like this. They absolutely need to get it turned around and quickly or they will most likely be gone--it's the nature of the business they are in and they know that. I'm just not going to bad mouth them in public like this. I'm with dwainegf in that each year I give them a clean slate and hope they do well.

i do know the coaches personally. it is not as if we are here making up stats and fake records. it's not like i'm trying to convince people that we didn't win a game last year or anything like that. most of us just aren't happy with our mens basketball program. i know people look at hoops like the redheaded stepchild of football....but if our football team was performing like our hoops team things would be scary on this board! why should we be fine with being terrible in hoops but we consider it unacceptable in football?
i have been on record many times saying i like coach huse. and i like most on his staff. and as a guy who used to coach a ton i appreciate all the work that goes into it. but ALL coaches work hard. and many are very good guys. doesn't mean that wins and losses don't mean anything. they do. and if huse wants to keep his job things better get fixed or 1500 people in the stadium will seem like a sellout compared to the attendance if things stay on this path.
you know who else knows huse personally? our athletic director. and if huse gets fired it won't be because fields doesn't like him or doesn't think he works hard. it will be because our program has progressively gotten worse, and the money is no longer there because fans don't want to watch it anymore.
all that said. i'm an idiot and i'll be at every home game again this year like i am almost every other year.

The biggest problem for the team is not when people are negative. The problem is when nobody cares at all-and we are getting dangerously close to the point where nobody cares at all. Just look at the traffic on this message board.
If you think this thread is negative, read a football game thread when our team turns it over or gives up a score-there will be more negative posts about that than there will be here for an entire season.

Good point BB. I think Bobcat Nation as a whole has reached a point of apathy with the Bball team just as the football team was in the 90's.

yeah, far cry from about 12 years ago when the msg boards chattered with just about anything in equal measure to football. I recall talking a ton about T/F and Volleyball (wow!...just wow!...what a demise). I like Huse, but Men's BB is not getting it done. Give somebody a reason to go the games (hint, it's not to watch a coach berate his players or the refs). Sometimes coaches out-think themselves, or over-coach. If there is any flamboyance and joy left in the NCAA, it is completely centered in Men's BB. Give us energy and heart, and they will come. Nobody will get flagged for excessive celebration.
