Found this article on the status of Huse's future.

Based on this he's gone. He's at the end of his contract and it was a sucky year. Too bad he is a good guy but you have to win games. It's part of the job description and he did not win enough.

...so what happens if the next guy doesn't turn it around either? Are we sure we can entice a better coach to come to Bozeman? I can see a young coach coming to Bozeman thinking that he is the next coming of Coach K, thinking he can do it with X's and O's....but an experienced coach with recruiting connections that has the need for a stable position might be almost impossible to attract.

then we fire him too. we can't just not bring in new blood just because that guy might not be successful either. the bottom line is it shouldn't be this impossible to have a winning basketball program in bozeman. unless huse finds a way to miraculously get us in the big sky championship...he needs to move on.

I remember 7 or 8 years ago people were calling for Coach Durham to be fired who had 4 losing seasons in his 16 year tenure. We have seen 4 in the last six years, with the other two years 1 game above .500

That would most definitely infuse some much needed energy to our program. I'd like to find a hungry Larry Krystkowiak type who is eager to advance his career in coaching after plaing in the NBA. Here 2-3,years and out of here leaving us with a nice foundation.

I would also like to find a Phil Jackson, or a Pat Riley. My point is that that is the hope in every hire that you have. When Huse was hired I had a Gritz fan tell me that we had gotten the better coach. In hindsight, I would like to trade.

Not so quick...Tinkle inherited a program that was fully established with the argueably the best basketball tradition in the big sky. Huse inherited a program that had been mediocre for a number of years. Unfortunately for us Huse and Bobcat fans Brad hasn't established that tradition or established the program. I believe if the rolls were reversed however Huse would be having the same success at Montana as Tinkle has had. I may be in the minority on this one though and thats fine.

That's true. Since that 2001-02 20 win season, MSU's two best seasons were each one game over .500 (one for Durham and one for Huse). Huse took over a mediocre program and kept it just below mediocre. If he had taken over at Montana instead of Tinkle he probably would have done better. Tinkle had the luxury of a legacy player in Selvig who brought along his buddy Brian Qvale-those guys were always going to go there. But Tinkle also brought in Cherry and Jamar. Huse's biggest weakness in my opinion is recruiting. He just hasn't brought in enough talent.

Huse has gotten some decent talent here (although not on the level of Qvale or Cherry), it just all goes back to not being able to RETAIN that talent. As we've discussed ad-nauseam, that's one of if not the most troubling parts about his tenure at MSU.

Huse had Johnson, Cherry and Stuckey all on campus, the problem was that he could not get them into MSU academically

Wow..really? Is MSU that much more academically stringent than UM? If that's so I didn't have a clue.

Yes. All three of those guys were on campus and Huse was trying to get them in. Lilliard as well.

Can you go into some detail on the differences between the universities academically and why these guys were eligible at UM and not MSU...not that I don't take your word, I'm more curious than anything. This to me puts a different spin on the U of M's success and MSU' lack of it.

It was my understanding that Huse had difficulty getting these players academically eligible to attend the school. This trend is common in college atheltics, but if a student athlete comes in under the requirements exceptions must be made by the university and MSU was not willing to sign off on those athletes at the time.

Wasn't Michael Ray Richardson a "Roads scaller"?

They must have been pretty damn low, as msu does not have stringent requirements for admission.

I think there are a bunch of people that would beg to differ. Not being able to get athletes through admissions and into certain schools is pretty common.
