First commit for the Spring

Post by mslacat » Wed Apr 10, 2013 10:31 pm

Just heard the Bobcat Men have received their first commit for the spring signing period that starts next week. Terrell Brown a 6-4 guard / forward from Otero JC in Colorado (originally from Colorado Springs high school)committed to Huse today. He averaged 15 points 3 rebounds while shooting 41% from the field and 35% from three point range. He was named first team all region and will have three years of eligibility for the Bobcats. Out of high school he had a rating from ESPN of 80 (which is pretty high for a Big Sky level recruit) and originally signed with South Dakota. This has Shawn Dirden finger prints all over it since he joined MSU this year after serving as an assistant at South Dakota previously. Dirden also coached high school ball in Colorado and is pretty well respected in Colorado by high school coaches and players. Interesting enough I have heard the Bobcats would really like to sign his Otero team mate 6-8 c/f Kentwan Smith. It will be interesting to see if this helps them. Kentwan is rumored to also be getting interest from the Griz among others.

Terrell Brown should be great addition for the Bobcats. Yes he is a JC player but he will have 3 years of eligablity. He was a First team All-Regional player as a freshman off a team that was ranked in the JC D-1 top 25 most of the season, so he has talent. He was also a qualifier out of high school which means in general he did/does not have the academic problems a lot of JC typically have. Finally he was recruited out of high school but Bobcat assistant Shawn Dirden to South Dakota, spent a year as a redshirt at SDU while Dirden was coaching there and then transferred down to Otero JC at about the same time Dirden left SDU to rejoin the Bobcats, So I think the Bobcats staff should have a very good idea of his strengths and weakness and how he will fit in with the program.

The Bobcats lost 2-3 quality wings this spring in Moon , Blount and Stewart (OK the last one is somewhat debatable). I really thought Coleman showed signs this year of being a potential starter for the 2013-14 year, but with Brown in the mix it will give him some competition. Aside from these two guards we will also have Dison, Biglow and Colbert (all 6 feet or smaller) which now gives us 5 quality back court players to cover the point guard, shooting guard and small forward spots next year. We also have freshmen to be guards 6-4 Lance Wentz and 6-3 Stephen Holm coming on board, but these guys will need to prove themselves to earn significant playing time.

Sounds like a good get. Any other rumors out there regarding bringing in a true post player? Somebody taller than 6-8 that can control things under the basket?

The Bobcats have been after a couple 6-9 players this spring. One just signed with Marshall. That was probably a good thing as I hear he was leaning towards the Griz over us. There are a couple high school and JC types they are looking at but most of the guys I am hearing about are closer to 6-8. That said though it is amazing how players like Egwuonwu and Norman grew an extra inch or two after signing with the Bobcats so we may still land that 6-9 guy this spring.

BTW If you like Big Guys keep your eye peeled for when the Bobcats start to sign their 2014 class this November. Assistant Coach Sanders (who is 6-9 himself) seems to be doing a great job cultivating some strong relationships with 6-9ish athletic post player from Texas and California. Hopefully that will pay off next year.

I would also like to point out that there were very few true big men (6-9 or better) in the Big Sky last year that were contributing significantly to their program. The Big Sky seems to be going with the little smaller guy who are more skilled or athletic.

It's great to have Shawn Dirden back on staff. I really think he's a great coach.
