CAT/griz

Post by blgscats » Tue Jan 07, 2014 10:30 pm

Just getting around to looking at the full bball schedule and noticed 1)We are no longer doing a Men's/Women's double header.....(I really thought that was fun). 2)Our home Men's game is on 2/3, that is a Monday. The Women's game at is 3/3 and that is a Monday also! Am I not looking at the right schedule or what the hell??? We always attend these games and living in Billings, Monday's don't work for us!

I believe the Monday schedule arises from the odd number of teams in the conference and the "odd team out", which is Southern Utah. So MSU or UM will play SUU on Thursday, the other team will play SUU on Saturday, and then Cat/Griz will be on Monday. You have to think they could figure out a way to have it on a weekend though, such as MSU/SUU on Thursday, MSU/UM on Saturday, and UM/SUU on Monday. Creating a schedule that will clearly decrease attendance for its biggest rivalry games can't be in the conference's best interest.

This is how it worked out last season, but Southern Utah didn't agree to switch the schedule this season. As I understand it, this won't be a problem next season when Idaho joins the conference and there are 12 members. All of the rivalry pairs are stuck with this arrangement. It would have been nice if the Big Sky stepped in and put some emphasis on rivalry games, but I guess we're stuck with it for this season.

I suppose SUU has a point there, as it wouldn't be fair to make them play a Thursday/Monday schedule instead of Thursday/Saturday every week in order to accommodate 'rivalry' games between travel partners such as MSU/UM, ISU/Weber, PSU/EWU. Thank goodness for Idaho coming in next year! I wonder what the travel partnerships will become...presumably:

MSU & UM
EWU & UI
PSU & Sac
NAU & SUU
Weber & ISU
UNC & UND

I think that's what it's going to be next season. There will be 18 conference games. Each team will play every other team at least once, and some twice. I'm guessing the travel partner will always be twice. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with, and maybe it won't be drawn up on a cocktail napkin, as former Weber State head coach Joe Cravens once suggested. I'm kind of hoping they dump the Monday games. Those had potential, but they're not that great for timing and travel.

I'm sure they'll go back to a straight Thursday/Saturday schedule next season. With an even number of teams, they should be able to eliminate the Monday games. I'm curious why they decided not to go with two divisions, and a 16 game schedule, playing the teams in your own division twice, and the teams in the other division only once.
