Summer Camp

Post by lv2hoop » Tue Jun 11, 2024 10:36 am

The guys are all back on campus for the next 8 weeks of practice to lay the groundwork for the 24-25 season. I'll be curious to hear reports of how things are shaping up. I think our roster is possibly better than a year ago, even with the massive loss of Rob and the transfer out of ETIII as well as the graduation of Big John Olmstead. It will really depend on how well some of the roster steps up and how well the new transfers step in and perform.

I would venture that we are one of the older teams in the conference with guys like Max, Tyler and Jabe who are in year 5-6 -- not a lot of teenagers to be found on our team except for probably Trap Johnson -- and in college hoops that is usually a good thing to be so old.

Current backcourt guys in no particular order: Patterson, Goracke, Mullins, Davis, Zephir, Miller, Carter Ash, Trap Johnson
Wings in no particular order: Agbonkpolo, McMahon, Robinson
Bigs in no particular order: B-Walker, Sam, Calum, Chika, Kolly

I'd love to be able to see some footage of summer practices. I know i have seen other schools such as UCLA show some summer video and so I keep hoping.

Can't wait for next season, I have been checking the MSU website every day for the updated '24-'25 roster to be posted. It's always hard to predict how teams will look from season to season given how much transfer activity there is these days, but MSU has to be considered one of the favorites next year with the returning talent they have alongside some very good transfers on paper. Let's go for four tournament appearances in a row, never been done before in the Big Sky!

I feel confident in saying that, on paper, the 2024-25 team is an upgrade in talent over the 2023-24 team. However, I think both teams are not quite at the level of Sprinkle's last couple of teams. In hindsight, Ford stepped up far more than we could have expected at this time last year. Turner was also better than advertised, and Olmsted really came into their own in the last four weeks of the season.

Last year's recruiting class by Logie was rather ragtag, but this year's class looks more focused and overall more talented. It will be interesting to see what improvements Logie can make with a recruiting class he had an entire year to assemble. For me, though, the key will be injuries or the lack thereof. If we can stay healthy and Logie can work his magic, I think this team can make a real impact on the conference. To consistently be at the top of the league, we will need to take a couple more steps in upgrading our talent even further in the next few years.

It's pretty interesting to look at the comparison between Sprinkle's career at MSU and Logie's so far. In Year 1, both benefitted from inheriting an all-conference senior point guard with Frey for Sprinkle and Ford for Logie. Both teams finished 5th in the Big Sky although we'll never know how Sprinkle's team would've fared in the Big Sky Tournament that year. In Year 2, Sprinkle's team was taking shape with key transfer players like Belo, Bishop, Adamu, and Abdul Mohamed on the roster. They also finished 5th but made their run to the Big Sky championship game, then we all know what happened from there. Logie seems to be on a similar trajectory of building the roster largely through experienced transfer players so far. In Year 3, Sprinkle got a pretty decent transfer from UW but also shifted to recruiting mostly high school players as that class brought in McMahon, Lecholat, Miller, and Osobor as well as a couple others who didn't pan out.
