WBB vs Spuds

Post by rfischer94 » Thu Jan 02, 2025 8:13 pm

At the 1st media time out it's the bad guys by 2. Defensive struggle so far. Dykstra with a couple uncharacteristic turnovers. Idaho's bench is obnoxiously loud.

In other news, Taylee Chirrick currently leads all scorers with 14. She hit 4, count them, 4, threes in the first half. Impressive player!

Cats by 10, 31-21! As usual they're winning with defense.

Correct, true freshman. And she already is a good one, just imagine what she'll be with another year or two of physical development and coaching from Binford and staff.

Chirrick also has two steals - ripped the ball right out of the other player's hands.

I don't like how easily idaho is getting too the rim. They scored 18 points in the 3rd and I swear they were all lay ins.

Cats win, 59-56. Not their best game but Idaho is a pretty good team so we'll happily take the W!

I don't know how that ended that close. It shouldn't have been. UI hit a couple of deep threes in the last minute or so. Our defense got a little too aggressive-over playing and letting them get past us for lots of layups. All the switching on defense got our bigs away from the basket too much. The defense did create a lot of turnovers. Very bad free throw shooting helped keep them in it. Even Morales who's about a 90% free throw shooter missed two. A lot of holiday rust I guess. Janssen and Deden both played a bit, but both were pretty ineffective. They both seemed to move okay so it's just going to take time to get the ol' muscle memory working again.

I don't think I have ever seen a game where the home team, let alone, either team, did not shoot a free throw, if the stats on ESPN are correct?!

Sorry, my error, it was the visiting team, Idaho, that did not shoot a free throw!

Yes, very odd to see a team not shoot a single free throw in a full game. MSU only committed 9 fouls the entire game if the box score is accurate.

Not the prettiest win but it's a win and it is so critical to protect your home court. Idaho is a good team and they have a good resume. Even some of their losses looked good against quality opponents.

They didn't shoot any free throws because the Cats mostly didn't contest any shots. The only one's who played physical defense were Chirrick and Picton. I guess when you have that many athletes you can just throw them in there and let them wear down the other team. Dykstra got the ball too high to make her patented step across hook. She also needs to take a hint from Deden and perfect the 8 footer in the lane.

Agree, watched on espn+. 2nd half they had layup after laup, then at the end hit a couple big 3s. Cats couldn't get to rim so settled at 6 feet with double fake turn around. Shot well from 3 and create a lot of turnovers, but that is an area they have to get better at.
