The last time that St. John’s had a number one ranking and played Montana State in the opening round. Montana State played well, but yielded to an 83–74 loss. The rest of the NCAA outside of the Big Sky and a few others were the only ones to have the three-point shot.
Anyone have any particular memories?
What was the guys name that Kral Ferch had the monster dunk over in that game?

March 14, 1986. The cats were a 16 seed against st. Johns in the 1st round at Long Beach. About 600 of us cat fans were there. All 5 of St Johns starters played in the NBA. Kral dunked over Shelton Jones, their 6' 9" center, and the cats kept it within 6-8 points most of the game. I was never prouder.

This guy played for the Cats? What a time to be a Bobcat fan!
Kral Ferch out of Livingston. His brother Shann played too although he transferred to Pepperdine. Kral's dunk over Shelton Jones is the greatest dunk in Bobcat history. No others need apply.

He hit his head on the backboard!! It's funny that the men are back to wearing those shorter shorts.

Given the level of competition and the fact it was during an NCAA tournament game, I concur. However, Will Bynum's dunk in the 2009 BSC tourney is a close second. If I'm not mistaken, Davin Davis was the BSC DPOY that season. Was a monster dunk:

Believe Kral’s dunk made the cover of SI.

Kral put one down in the Fieldhouse against the Univ. of Calif. Berkeley Golden Bears. Kevin Johnson, long time NBA star, was on that team. Kral got himself a boost on a shoulder on the way up (he said in his interview) and it seemed like he arrived with the rim at the mid-chest level. To say he flushed it with two hands is an understatement. It was in front of the Cal bench and they were even jumping around hooting and hollering. One of the most, if not the most, spectacular individual plays I’ve ever seen.
I've been an SI subscriber since '75. I do not believe it did make the cover. Could be wrong.
I agree. I was a subscriber for 50 years, starting about ‘72. I had a small stack that had items of local interest, and I surely don’t remember that one.
