Trap Johnson's decision to enter the transfer portal is particularly concerning for me. It would be easier to understand if he had an outstanding breakout year on the court as a true freshman, but he didn't even play. Does anyone have insights into why he chose to leave? Did he experience buyer's remorse after departing from Texas? Was he that dissatisfied with not playing as a true freshman? We'll have to see where he ends up, but does he possess so much potential that another school would be willing to invest significant NIL money in him? Or was he just homesick? I am sorry that we will never see him play for the Bobcats.

I have no idea why he left but it's pretty sad that we lose a kid who was "100% committed" a year ago and didn't even hang around long enough to play. Sheesh.

College athletics is a clown show.
Don't give half a ****** anymore. No one knows who is playing where and when and if they're even going to be there the next year. No investment from players and no investment from me.
I'll tune in during the tournament/playoffs to see where things stand. What a ****** shame.

No investment from a lot of the coaches either, so many guys leaving jobs after one year even for what seems like a fairly small step up on the career ladder. Both the Cats (Binford) and Griz (DeCuire) are very, very lucky to have at least one coach who has been happy to stick it out over the long haul, which is a big part of the reason why I fully expect the Griz men and the Bobcat women to remain the stronger programs moving forward in the rivalry. Coach Sprinkle made a lot of progress but that has mostly been undone at this point with his departure and the current world of transfer portal chaos every off-season.

Let's just use the griz logic thay they use for football, on basketball here. We'll bring in more transfers from the portal than the griz because Logie is a better recruiter. Not because Travis does a good job of retaining talent and recruiting.

I'm guessing he ends up playing at VMI with his older brother.

I somewhat understand going from NAIA, D2, low major, and mid major up to power conference because the money is significant. The players going from a top 25 program to another top 25, when they are getting paid, playing a lot, and winning makes 0 sense to me.

It's never going to make sense when it's so easy for players to transfer with no repercussions whatsoever. Didn't enjoy winter in New York, transfer to Florida next year. New girlfriend lives in Texas, I'll go play there instead and if we break up I can just transfer again. The NIL guy at School Y is offering me a nicer car than the one I'm getting at School X...transfer portal! There's even a story today of Tennessee's starting QB "holding out" of their spring practices to negotiate a better NIL deal than what he's currently getting (a mere $2.4 million per year). Presumably the implied threat is that if he doesn't get his NIL money he'll portal out next month when the Spring window opens to go to a school that will pay him his desired amount. We can choose to accept the portal or choose to let it diminish or destroy our enjoyment of college sports, but I don't think anyone will ever truly be able understand the reasons why individual players make the decisions they do.

Good point. I forgot that Trap's older brother plays at VMI.

Yep! right there with you. I only care about Bobcat football and Basketball. Might catch a little of the CFP playoffs and March Madness but zero interest in spending any time watching a regular season game.

Well said, 1500 kids in the basketball portal I believe! ... everybody else is doing it so might as well see what I can get.... Uncle tells me I should be getting more minutes....

Concerning the line above that I bolded, personally I choose to accept the portal. Even though I've accepted the portal I know that it has and will continue to diminish and destroy my enjoyment of college sports.
Oh sure I could try to think the portal is great for college sports, just like I could become a super fan of the UM Grizzlies too, but that's never going to happen either.

I also understand a player that came in with Trap’s credentials being disappointed by not playing a minute. But I blame NCAA Basketball for that situation. Why are they operating under the archaic redshirt rule of no minutes allowed where football permits up to 1/3 of a season’s games for redshirts? That’s just stupid, assuming it is still that way.
By the same weight, a redshirt basketball player should be able to participate in up to 10 games with no penalty. It would be good for coaches, to see players play. It would be good for players — what a great incentive to practice hard and compete. And it would benefit fan interest — I was very interested in watching Trap play. With all the injuries it would be helpful to teams in a short-bench situation. So who in the power conferences (who run college sports) is blocking this?
This has been bugging me …

We have no idea if it would have affected Johnson's decision to transfer, of course, but I agree with you 100% that the football redshirt rule should be applied to other sports as well. I know it has been discussed and I'd guess that change will be made sooner rather than later. Seems pretty unfair that one sport gets to do that and the rest don't.

Surprised it hasn't been a lawsuit yet, seems like players are suing for everything else, NIL, JC years don't count, transfer wide open.
