How high does he have to place in order to be named All American?

Top 8 placers, plus top 8 Americans make all-american. So if all 8 are American, that's it. If five of the top 8 are foreign, then 13th would make all-american for sure. If the top ten are foreign, 18th could do it. I don't know how many are foreign in the mile. What a year. 22 under 4:00 for the mile in DI. When Henigman made all-american in 2006 he was eighth, but the third American.

Good Luck Mr. Casey! I'm sure this will be a very international field. I haven't researched, but Patrick may be already be All-American.

note: I ran into Scott McGowan, UM, Poplar, MT a few weeks ago. Scott was the first and is still the only other Montanan to break 4:00. Next time I see him, I'll have to ask him how he likes allowing a Bobcat into his exclusive club. After running professionally for New Balance, Scott is doing well farming back in Poplar.

I just can't imagine how a person runs that fast for that long. You would think something would have to give out long before. These guys are very impressive!

VERY interesting prelims! Casey is in Finals. He took 4th in his heat (8 runners, 16 laps). Was in last a good part of the race. Tried to make a move at about the 1/2 way pt, got tangled up with another runner and stumbled. Fell back to last. He did make a move with 2 left, moved up to tie for first, expended a ton of energy. He was able to hold on for fourth (by 0.03 sec), which was a very good thing because 1st heat was faster. Any thing less than 4th and he wouldn't have made finals.

He can absolutely run with all of these guys. He got stuck in the rear and had to make burn a lot of gas making moves. I'm sure Coach Kennedy will go over strategy with him. Perhaps quicker out of the box to not get stuck in the back. The winner of the first heat was the defending champion out of New Mexico. He looked very strong, has to be the favorite. Casey has a good chance to make All-American (top 8). With the competitive fire I saw in this race, it would not be impossible for him to win the whole darn thing! GO BOBCATS!

The greatest indoor collegiant miler in the country, out of Montana State.....

I didn't catch the race, but it looks like Casey got lucky in drawing the slower heat and qualified 10th for the finals. The first heat was averaging about 2 minutes faster than Casey's heat.

So only 10 advance, with Casey's time 10th. I was told they would take 12. Anyhow, he has a very good chance for all-American now. If there are two foreign runners it is assured. I talked to Coach Kennedy a few minutes ago and he was surprised at how he ran, going through the 400 in 65 and 800 in 2:07. Last week he was 1:59 at 800. He had to pull it off the hard way. But you never know what will happen at NCAA's. It is especially difficult mentally the first time.
This was nothing like the way he usually races.

Wow...Congratulations to Casey, his teammates, and the coaching staff.

And he's only a freshman.

Coach Kennedy said that the rule is different now for All-American. You must make the top 8, whether or not you are American. So Patrick will need to beat a few runners tomorrow.

Having watched Patrick run, I believe he can be in the top 8 finishers. Patrick seems to see his competition and then do what he needs to do to get the job done. Congratulations to a great runner and an excellent representative of MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY. GO PATRICK! =D^
