Bobcat Hockey info help

Just wondering if anyone has any information about the level of play that the MSU club hockey team plays at. It’s the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Div II. My son is considering playing. He has been playing since he was 4 and he just finished his last year of U18 AA select in Canada. He was passed up for the WHL draft this year but has received a tryout opportunities in the BCHL that he is not considering. I’m certain that the ACHA is definitely not the same level of skill as advanced junior league in Canada. But how does it compare to U18 AA select?
He is graduating from HS this year and has been accepted to several schools including EWU, UM, WWU and UI. He’s also potentially going to apply at MSU. He wants to study engineering and is a serious student so he understands that UM is probably out.
He is going to skate with the UM and WWU this month for a tryout and potentially EWU, UI and MSU later to see how he stacks up with the team. He’s a very physical defenseman, a great skater with a good slap shot. But we have no idea how that will go. Does anyone know if most of the players have experience playing Junior Hockey or do most come out of the youth leagues?

Did you check out the roster? https://msuhockey.com/roster/

Looks like they have a wide range of players from different backgrounds. 18U AAA, 18U AA, USPHL Premier, Minnesota High School, Juniors, Billings Club, Colorado HS, D III, Etc, etc.

The griz camp this weekend had skaters from advanced/major junior league teams (16-19yo) participating. Does anyone know if they are eligible to play in the ACHA? The ACHA website doesn't say, that I could find. They are not eligible to play in the NCAA. Wondering if or why the club collegiate teams allow this.

The club level is not governed by the NCAA. I'm certain that that even major juniors can play on the team.

My daughter is going to be rostered as a backup goalie for a club team back east next year. She is 28, works full time and takes online classes from a different university than the club team. They recruited her and said it's fine.

Yes I know that major juniors can play in the ACHA but they cannot play NCAA. However they just changed the rules a couple weeks ago to allow major junior players to play NCAA. This will definitely hurt some of the high end ACHA teams such as the bobcats.

What does this mean? They aren't adding teams so isn't there still a need for playing time for that type pmayer?

I'm just saying that most of the kids who played major juniors will be playing in the NCAA with a scholarship now. They won't be forced to play ACHA. The cats have several of those guys and so do the griz

But to play NCAA they still have to be enrolled don't they. I'm still not following, where are all these NCAA openings going to come from?

Yes they need to be enrolled. I wasn't aware that to play on the ACHA club you didn't even have to be enrolled. I'm saying that most of those players that were good enough to play major juniors will make rosters on teams that are scholarship NCAA teams. They won't have to play club hockey with no scholarship. Does that not make sense?
In other words they will leave MSU to play scholarship hockey.

Makes sense just wondering why if they are good enough they were not already playing scholarship hockey. Are more schools goi g to offer so more spots available? Will players who were in ACHA now take other players spots? That is what is throwing me. If there are mot more scholarships available how is this helping that group.

The players that played major juniors were not eligible for NCAA scholarship hockey prior to about two weeks ago. They were considered professional athletes. They were forced to play ACHA. Now the NCAA has changed the rules and allowed them to be eligible. They will now displace a lot of players on the scholarship rosters and the ACHA will lose them.

Gotcha, because they started at that level and moved up they essentially had lost their eligibility. So the good ones will go ncaa, but those who they displace will then be able to play, bit level of play for a cat or griz program will be less.

The players that played major juniors were not eligible for scholarship hockey prior to about two weeks ago. They were in considered professional athletes.
For years players with aspirations of playing college NCAA hockey would play their juniors at a step below the advanced level so they could maintain their college eligibility. Now it doesn't matter so the really good 16yo doesn't have to make that decision. They are eligable for scholarship hockey no matter where they played their juniors at.
