Interesting you should bring that up. I was just in Butte this weekend for the state wrestling convention and our keynote speak for lunch on Saturday was Jim Street. He has a very large knowledge of both Montana and Butte history; which he shared with us. A part of his speech was in regards to the pride associated with coming from Butte. He spoke of several individuals who, when asked where they are from, will always say Butte regardless of where they may currently reside.
I thought this was interesting as it is one step higher in terms of pride then perhaps what I do (when I'm asked this question, my standard reply is to say that I live in Bozeman but grew up in Glasgow).

Jim said that if America is the melting pot of the world, then Butte is the "stew".
Now that's interesting, I say I'm from Glasgow, even though I grew up in Stanford. Scotty Pride runs pretty deep. Maybe we're the Butte of the East!! We're the butt of almost as many jokes.

I spent a weekend recently in that fine city, and I can attest that the people make the place, and the people couldn't have been more welcoming to this flatlander. Kudos to all the Butte natives and current residents, and I plan to visit again soon. Well at least Old Works!!

Whenever I spy comments like "I wish there were more CAT FANS in Butte, or Butte is a griz town" I grudgingly admit it is a fact. But it wasn't always like that. From the middle of the last century to perhaps the mid-eighties, Butte was all about BOBCAT athletics. In fact from the mid-fifties throughout the next few decades Bobcat athletics, (football in particular) was anchored by Butte athletes, and that was a good thing because Butte was still in it's athletic hay-day. I'll just cover a sampling...Sonny Holland, Bob Biostock, Fred Turner and Billy Mulcahy (co-captains in the early 60's), Bill Cords who became AD at both UTEP and Marquette, Gary Carle, Bob Given, Ray Becky, Dan Hodge, Bert Markovich, Pat Bolton, Paul Dennehy, Jim Anderson, Ron Ueland, Barry Sullivan, Si Timberman, Marc Paffhausen...most All-BSC; some in the Hall-of-Fame. I apologize to the scores I didn't mention. On top of that you have Coaches Sweeney, Holland, Lubick almost back-to-back from that same period. Bobcat football flourished and maybe ButteAmerica had something to do with it. However......now comes the mystery.
Sometime around the start of the Tom Parac era, weather factual or farce, the supposed word went out that it was time to "break-up the Butte connection". I heard about it, others heard about it....Butte heard about it. And Butte being Butte...it pi$$ed many off. I was at a game in Moscow, Idaho in the mid-90's and came upon some Bobcat oldtimers tailgating off the back of their camper. We started chatting about the CATS and one of them said, "things haven't been the same since we broke up the Butte connection". I was in a Butte bar just a couple of years ago and ran into an old friend who had two sons. One played for the CATS, the other was a griz. As usual talk eventually turned to the CATS and Griz. "How are things in Bozeman?", I asked. "They hate us", he whispered. "Do you believe that "breakup the Butte connection thing?". "Absolutely" was his answer. Some may snicker, roll their eyes; most folks probably don't give a crap. But they absolutely believe it in Butte. Personally, I'd love to see Colt Anderson in our secondary.
Like everything else though, these things tend to come and go. It certainly looks like our coaches have landed some good ones from Butte High this year, both basketball and football.

My dad still comes uncorked when anybody mentions Solomonson, because Earle completely wrecked what he calls "The Butte Connection."

By the way, my dad and I left Billings at 6:30 am to drive up to Butte for the St. Patty's day parade.

What did we do once we got there at 9:00 am? Went to the M & M to quench our thirst, of course. After all, why wouldn't we?

I was talking to a local who said it was the biggest crowd he'd ever seen. It was on a Saturday and hit 70.

The gov, Rehberg, and Tester were there. Tester was running around like an idiot, but that was one occasion I don't think it really mattered what your political persuasion was, it was a damn good time.

I highly recommend St. Patty's day in Butte on a Saturday.

Tap 'er light.

So Tester was just being himself. He is an idiot.

Butte is the best city in Montana, now please go tell everyone it sucks, call it "Butt" and then slam the Irish or make a joke about the water.

I don't think Earle had so much to do with that as Parac and some key boosters did. After all, Earle didn't fire Lubs.

I think the so-called Butte connection was alive and well, and I do think that some key boosters were tired of it, Parac included. If you take a look back at Lubick's staff that got fired, many of them were from Butte or had gone through Butte during their professional career. Alas, after 2 straight losses to the griz, the Butte connection got scuttled.

No it wasn't the coach, but it was some (they think) highly influential (mouthy) people advising MSU.
