Hi Chet! Big fan of your work on this board so far. =D^

Let me, as a commoner, shed some light on this for you.

We like things simple. Like when you are grouping together a 10 year period like the 90s you start with the first year that, whan you 'say' it goes 'ninety' then 'ninety one' and so on until you get to 'ninety nine'. Then you get to a year that sounds different like 'two thousand'. Lets play Sesame Street and see which one of these doesn't belong. :D

By the way I picked your MSU in my Bowl Pick'em so GO SPARTY  =D^

Chester is pretty sure you're a cool cat Thunder. However, you picking his Spartans to beat TxTech tells him a little something about your intelligence... therefore Chester has to take your input on the decade discussion as, say, rather "Simple" :D
(Chesters school has suspended / kicked off approximately 10 players for the bowl game. 5 are starters. they decided to get into a major brawl in a campus dorm after their banquet the other week. [-X )

OH SH!T! I didn't know that. I made a mustache bet on bowl pickems and that is one of only 8-9 that we picked differently. Luckily I am already 1 up by virtue of WY winning today.

but if the suspended players are allowed to return for the 10-11 season... they will technically return THIS decade. 8)

If on this date in 2019 we finally end this debate, will that have been a decade?

Aren't all decades arbitrary?

Chet, be careful, GL almost never loses an argument (lawyers :? ...). But I think he is right. If you are talking about a counting sytem that by definition originates from the year one you are right. The 20th century started after the 19th centruy ended, and since there was no year 0 the 19th century ended on 12/31/1901.

BUT, we can start counting a decade like the 90's whenever we want and we started on 1/1/1990 and ended 10 years later on 12/31/1999.

That's exactly right.

If the decade we're talking about was commonly referred to as "The 200th Decade A.D.," then it would be correct to point out that it didn't end until December 31, 2000. But it isn't. It's referred to as "the 90's," and saying that "the 90's" ended on December 31, 1999 is perfectly fine.
