Yes, that was craftfully written piece. The author seems to be trying to draw his readers in with an objective approach, then slickly nudges them over to one side. Is he making concession only so that he can have his more heartfelt point or is he on the up-and-up? As usual, it's all up for interpretation.

Oh, I assume his main point is to point the finger at the right (as anything coming from the left in this regard is only the response to the marketing of the right), but by opening up with a remark critical of the left and of Sheehan in particular, he might be more effective at wedging open some minds that would otherwise dismiss his point completely.
