question for the "computer geeks" amongst us

Post by RickRund » Wed Feb 15, 2012 12:32 pm

To lead into my question, we were in Fresno, CA this past weekend for a softball tourney at Fresno State. Our Niece plays 1st base for Univ of Toledo. They played NDSU, Cal. Riverside, Long Beach and Fresno State. Jillian was on base 3 times with BB and 3 times HBP and I believe she had 4 base hits. What really impressed me was her fielding. I nicknamed her JT after JT Snow.....WOW.
Now the question. Patti took video with our Sony CyberShot camera and uploaded them to Facebook. She went through both our desktop, HP Pavilion P6000 and her Toshiba Satellite laptop. It took what seemed like over an hour for each video. But her status bar did not seem as if it always said the upload was done when maybe it was done. Our speeds are about a 203ms Ping, Download of 2.6ish mbps and upload of .410mbps.....How long SHOULD it take to load videos? Every time she has done any loading like that it has always taken A LONG time.....Just curious.

Upload speeds are usually pretty slow. Also our TECH toys are able to hold more and more memory which usually means we record a higher quality image/video, resulting in a larger file.
To figure what your expected times should be, you could try and do the math on it.

So, first let’s convert mbps (mega-BITS per second) to (mega-BYTES per second)
.410 mbps / 8 ( 8 bit in a bytes) = .05125 Mega-Bytes per second
.05125 Mega-Bytes = 51,250 bytes per second

So your actual upload speed is = 51,250 bytes per second. Now you can look at the size of the file you are trying to upload and figure out how long it should take.
Just divide the size of your file by 51,250.
As an example, let’s say your file is 3.5 Meg, which is 3,500,000 bytes

3,500,000 / 51,250 = 68 second
So, uploading a 3.5 Meg file should take a little over 1 minute with your upload speed.

Hope that gives you and idea….. Videos can usually get pretty large, as you can see a when the file sizes are getting 10, 20, 50, 100 Meg, it’s going to take some time.

RR when I shoot video of the Griz games and upload the edited product to youtube to embed in maroonblood.com a 7-10 min video takes 2-5 hours to upload. It is quicker to upload them late at night I usually load the youtube uploader with 2 or 3 of the 7+mins videos and start them at 12-1 am and let them load all night.

Upload speeds suck on DSL or broadband service. If you have an unlimited data plan for your smart phone, teather your computer to your smart phone and upload that way it cuts the time down by at least half. 7 mins now uploads in about an hour, hour and a half.
