The Reputation is playing in Billings at the Railyard on March 31st. This is the first time they've played in MT, so they probably don't have much of a following there yet. I've been following them for a couple years now after catching them in SF with a friend of mine (who has a much better nose for finding good shows than I do). I then had the good fortune of finally being in town for their show this last Friday. They packed the house at the Hotel Utah, and they were great once again.
They are also an amazing fan-based band. I talked to most of the band members after the show (they were getting a bit drunk like the rest of us), and spent a fair amount of time talking to Elizabeth, their lead singer. I had met her and spoken about ten non-memorable words to her at the first show of theirs that I saw (two years ago), but when I introduced myself to her again, I was actually quite surprised when she told me that she remembered me from the last time. She just graduated from Northwestern Law School and passed the bar (that's her fallback career option), so her book smarts apparently translates into a great memory.
All of this rambling aside, if you are into great live music, I highly recommend checking them out. She told me to tell my friends in MT to show up and chat with her after the show. So to steal a line from my fraternity brother, "Tell'em Brad sent ya," and she'll know what you're talking about (at least, she claimed she would).

I checked out their homepage; they look interesting. I noticed, though, that they're going to be on the east coast in mid-April, but they're skipping New York City (while doing concerts in Boston, Philly, and f*cking New Haven...what the hell?)

I'm sure they'll hit NYC at some point (and I'm sure they have in the past). It sounds like most of their shows get on the schedule somewhat organically. For instance -- the day after the show I saw, they said they had to drive up to Ukiah for a show next. Our reaction: "Where the h--- is Ukiah?" Turns out that it is a small town about 100 miles north of San Francisco. When I asked how that show came about, they explained that on their last tour they had a diehard fan make the drive down to SF for the show, and he asked them to come play in Ukiah on their next tour -- so they are.
They have an amazing schedule. Knowing that they do a good dose of partying after every show, looking at their calendar and see how much distance they cover and how many shows they play is amazing. Considering that she does have pretty good career options, the fact that she chooses to pursue her love of music out on the music is something I really admire.
But seriously ... now you have an excuse to catch the train up to New Haven!
I got kicked out of a bar in New Haven once for wearing athletic shoes (and they weren't track spikes) ... and it was supposedly a sports bar ... and it was in a crappy part of town (which is somewhat redundant). Yeah, I have lots of love for New Haven.

Yeah, New Haven sucks. I have a couple friends at Yale right now (one is a law professor; the other is a grad student), and they both can't wait to get out. The guy who teaches at the law school is a friend of mine from when I worked in DC, and he actually almost turned down the teaching fellowship there because he didn't think he could deal with living in New Haven for three years (even though a teaching fellowship at Yale Law School is pretty much the keys to the kingdom). I actually got lost up there one night, which is supposedly a pretty good way to get yourself murdered...I obviously came out of it ok, but I did get to see a few more burning garbage cans than I would consider ideal.Bay Area Cat wrote:But seriously ... now you have an excuse to catch the train up to New Haven!

That said, I actually probably would go to either the New Haven or Philly show (Philly is actually closer), but the New Haven show is during the week that my parents will be visiting me, and the Philly show is on a Tuesday night (and I'm in the process of changing jobs right now, so taking Wednesday off isn't so easy). I will watch for them whenever they get to NYC, tho.

Checking out the links above, one of them has them playing the Mercury Lounge in NYC on the 17th between the New haven gig and Philly.Grizlaw wrote:Yeah, New Haven sucks.
