But if the 'poor me' thing you described really is the cause, then it's probably in everyone's best interests to hear just that. I think, not sure, that there's some kind of correlation between abuse and crime. That's not to say that all crimes are commited by the abused (see Kenneth Lay), just that it may be a factor. As you may be alluding to, a lot of people just throw that out there when they get busted. The police don't even read them their rights and they're blaming mom and dad. Yes, that's 'CRAP!'

Jag...it's a matter of time before something similar happens in missoula...fact of life...if the situation involves ex-athletes then the school is probably not responsible...the perpetrators are...if the situation involves student-athletes then certainly the school is implicated in some fashion...

ok now for a relevent stretch...i don't see anyone holding usc responsible for the actions of oj simpson...the time between situations is clearly larger but the relationship with the university is the same...ex-athlete kills two...

But in all fairness, she didn't use that as an excuse for the crimes or try to justify the crimes by sharing that information. That information is by no means irrelevent, but it is also certainly not a valid justification for murder.

Uh, need I remind everyone that neither of these guys has been proven guilty? I would also like to ask how many people out there have ever moved from one town to another. It is HUGELY expensive! So no, it's not reasonable to assume that when an athlete loses their scholarship that they'll just pack up and go home. Many of these people come from extreme poverty and were hoping that school and/or athletics would be a way out. Once that scholarship is gone, they are stuck here until they can figure something else out. And yes, Branden was suspended and lost his scholarship because of poor grades. He was, however, reinstated immediately by the suspension appeals board then decided to leave school for personal reasons. It's not MSU's fault for what happened with anyone involved. There is a much bigger circle of life at play here.

You also have John (Freak) that was part of the foster care system in Florida (need I say anything about that shining example of a completely screwed up system - remember that was the state that lost a kid and still have not found her). He was bounced around from home to home up and down the eastern US. Then at 18 they are no longer part of anything. So tell me where he was supposed to go back to?? Maybe I am a little more compassionate than most since I was adopted and my father was apart of the foster care system (man does he have stories that would make your hair turn grey!!!). He was fortunate to have finally landed into a wonderful home that took him as their own. He ended up taking their last name even though he was never formally adopted (major medical problems prevented that from happening - couldn't afford his care if they adopted him).

Thanks irishcat23 for pointing out the obvious that they are innocent until proven guilty. We don't know anything for sure and should keep that in mind.

I need to ask something. Why is it when a kid say 15 kills someone they are tried as an adult but a girl at 15 has sex with someone (and wants to - not a rape situation) say at the age of 18 or 19 they are still a child?? How can the system say that you are able to make an adult decision to kill someone at 15 but not to have sex?? Has that not made anyone else question the rules?? Just a thought.
