I don't know if you guys have ever seen this lady around Bozeman, but when I was in Missoula there was a woman originally from Philly who had this big vending truck that she used to sell authentic philly cheesesteaks from (by "authentic," I mean they were served with melted Cheeze Whiz instead of real cheese, and were incredibly greasy and delicious).
She used to set up shop right outside the Iron Horse at about 2 am once every couple weeks, and she said she did the same in Bozeman and a few other towns in the area. But anyway -- I would've taken one of her sandwiches any day over the Pickle Barrel, and I'd also put them up against the "authentic" philly cheesesteak shops here in New York (I've never been to Philadelphia, so I can't make that comparison). If she's still around and you ever see her in Bozeman, check it out (regardless of what time of day it is and whether or not you just ate -- her sandwiches really are that good).

I work as an attorney so that I can afford good scotch, which helps me to forget that I work as an attorney.

I think Starkys is very delicious. I love their Chicken Pot Pie Soup, and their sandwhiches are pretty loaded with meat. Maybe not worth the extra buck, though.

As far as I know, you can still get 50 cent sodas at Joes, but the proce of a Cheesesteak jumped fomr 4.95 last year to 5.55 this yearmquast53000 wrote:I think Honolulu dated himself a little when he was talking about $.50 pops. That takes a whole beer out of my budget!barechestcat wrote:Ya 'cause that extra $.60 takes 1/3 of a beer out of your weekly budget.
.75 is the most I pay for beers, from stores away. Even then I get pissed. I buy cubes for about 13.99 and not a penny more.

Ok, lets cut the crap!
I am 46 and have been around the block a few times.
THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO A CHEESE STEAK FROM THE PICKLE BARREL. (no, I have no fiduciary connection with this enterprise)
My first dorm room was 215 Colter, about as close to the Pickle Barrel as you can get. I do admit that my proximity to the promised sandwich land led to my weight problem today......but the fact still remains that nothing in Montana beats their sandwiches!

I will agree with you on the assessment of the Bozeman (aka "Original") Pickle Barrel. However, for some reason, I don't think the Pickle Barrel in Great Falls is as good.vike_king wrote:...but the fact still remains that nothing in Montana beats their sandwiches!

If you're opening this up to the entire state of Montana (instead of merely Bozeman), then I'm going to have to just go ahead and, uh, disagree with you on that. I love the Pickle Barrel's sandwiches too, including their cheesesteaks, but there are at least two places in Montana that are better: one is the lady with the cheesesteak stand that I mentioned earlier in this thread (she's in Missoula, and I think sometimes in Bozeman also -- although I've been gone for four years, so it's possible she's not around anymore)...and the other cheeseteak that beats the Pickle Barrel is Curly's, in Missoula.vike_king wrote:I do admit that my proximity to the promised sandwich land led to my weight problem today......but the fact still remains that nothing in Montana beats their sandwiches!

Speaking of Missoula, I'd kill to have a Hoagieville in Bozeman, or anywhere else in the state.

Hoagieville = very tasty but very greasy hot sandwiches, plus good cheese fries. A meal there will take a few years off of your life, but it's probably a fair trade. It also has the novelty of being a drive-in (sort of like the old A&Ws), which can be good or bad depending on whether you're in the mood for eating in your car.barechestcat wrote:What is the deal with Hoagieville anyway? A family, griz fans, who has a daugher in my son's class was telling me about this place the other day. She said it's an absolute must stop when they go for games.
Incidentally, I don't know if they have a cheesesteak on the menu -- if they do, it's probably pretty good, but I've never had it.

You can get turkey hoagies there that I'm sure aren't as bad. But I get the regular bologna ones with cheese fries... mmmmmmmmmmmmGrizlaw wrote:Hoagieville = very tasty but very greasy hot sandwiches, plus good cheese fries. Never had the cheesesteak at Curley's, but the steak STEAK was excellent.
Absolutely thee best cheesesteak I ever had in Montana was at Taste of Philly in Kalispell. It's not where it was (Evergreen) so I don't know if it moved or went out of biz. It was a small place and might not have been able to do enough volume to make a go.
Another very good philly is served at Naps, which is about 5 doors down from Stocks. They have the best burgers and chix sands in town, too.
Interestingly, I think Hoagieville used to be an A&W if I remember correctly. If you go there, make sure to order the Hoagie CHEESE fries, not just fries, or Hoagie Fries.

Curly's is a little different than your typical cheesesteak; in fact, now that I think about it, it might not really be fair to compare Curly's with Pickle Barrel, or with most cheesesteak places.barechestcat wrote:Grizlaw,
So what makes Curly's good? The flavor? The size? Both? Just curious because some days I just want a big old fat gut buster and flavor just needs to be average.
For those who have never been to Curly's -- it is not a fast food restaurant. It is a fairly nice sit-down place. What makes their cheesesteak better is the flavor. It's been a few years since I've been there so I don't remember what kind of steak they use, but it's something of a little higher quality than what you'd typically find in a cheesesteak. The other interesting thing about their sandwich is that they use cream cheese instead of regular cheese (the first time I ordered it, I asked the waitress to substitute real cheese -- she told me to try one with cream cheese, and said that if I didn't absolutely love it, she'd bring me one with real cheese. If you've never had a cheesesteak with cream cheese, try it sometime -- it sounds weird, but it's awesome.)
