Advise requested "DJ Sets"

Post by mslacat » Wed Dec 09, 2009 1:16 pm

Hey I am hoping someone can help me with this, and it has to do with getting my son a DJ set. When I grew up in the 70's a DJ was someone who played records on a radio station, now it also means a musician who plays and mixes music more as an instrument. It is the later that I looking for some advise on. My 13 year old son wants a "DJ Set" for Christmas. My son is very into music he plays the Saxophone very well and dinks around with Guitar and drums a little too. He has already collected enough music on his I-pod that he needs one with more memory. I have always encouraged his music, because music was a huge part of my life. The problem I have with buying him a DJ set is that I am not sure he has any idea how to use it. I remember when I was given a guitar for my birthday after the first day it stood in the corner of my room for two years before I actually got mt first guitar lesson in high school. I have asked him to do some research on "DJ'ing" and get back yo me what it would take to learn how to use a DJ set and basically all he did is find a beginner "DJ set" for $300, and say there you go dad. I have not got the foggiest idea as to what makes a "DJ set" is this a teach your self kind of thing, which he assures me it is. I have also not been able to find "DJ lessons" in Missoula so I am completely flying blind here. I feel very very old today! Any advise or insight?

I saw that and offered but, him being a "real musician" he wanted a "REAL DJ SET" not "A TOY".

msla, i just got off the phone with my friend but i don't know how much help he's going to be. for starters, he said for the most part, dj's become good by trial and error. when he started, he had no idea what he was doing. he loved music, had a ton of records, and came across an old turntable. he basically just taught himself. that has changed a lot now though. most music is stored on computers now, but he said the concept is still the same. and while the music is being stored on a couple laptops, dj's still come equipt with their own turntables. the best advice he said he could give, would be to do a quick google search on "beginner turntables". like everything you buy online, do some research and compare prices. but finding a good, cheap turntable should not be an issue.

*edit* he just sent me this link. hope it's helpful.

Here is a link to a website I use quite a bit, you can shop around and for the most part cant beat their prices.

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/dj ... j-packages" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There are packages for every price range.

I agree with the poster above it is a trail and error kind of learning curve, but at his age learning how to hook the stuff up properly and mix music from different sources (laptop,ipod,turntable,mic). It also teaches him about balanced and unbalanced audio etc

If you need any info on the setup and running of this kind of stuff just let me know.
