Missoula, Montana's largest city?
Betsy Cohen of the Missoulian thinks Missoula will be Montana's largest city after the 2010 census.
Is there one other fool on here that believes this?
In other news Ms. Cohen saw Santa and the Easter Bunny eating lunch at the Press Box.

Re: Missoula, Montana's largest city?
Since when is a community defined by a 50-mile corridor around it? Why not 35 miles? Or 75 miles? It's not like these are major metropolitan areas where it's impossible to determine where one town begins and another ends without a sign saying so. And do people 50 miles away from Billings or Missoula consider themselves a part of that community? I don't think so.

That's a county census, not a city. Bozeman doesn't count Livingston (Park Co.), Belgrade, Manhattan, Three Forks, Willow Creek and West Yellowstone part of their population.wbtfg wrote:I could definitey believe it. I'm just going by what was stated in the article...I'm not sure where she gets her info.GOKATS wrote:That's a county census, not a city. According to data from the last U.S. Census, Missoula's population, including the 50-mile zone around the urban corridor, was 140,000, making it the second-largest community in the state after Billings, which was counted at 142,000.
When the 2010 census is completed and the data is released in 2012, Missoula's population within the 50-mile zone will be around 160,000, making Missoula the largest community in the state.

Re: Missoula, Montana's largest city?
Wiki says (and Wiki is never wrong) that Missoula has a metro population of 107,000 and Billings has a metro population of 180,000. I wonder how far they went out for those numbers?
Counties in 2000 had Missoula at 95,000 and Yellowstone at 130,000. A difference of 35,000
Want a perspective:
Recent estimations of city limits puts Missoula at 67,000 and Billings at 104,000. The difference is roughly the size of Bozeman (2007 estimate, 37,000). So add Missoula and Bozeman, you get Billings.
Also, I'm guessing the recession has hit Missoula much harder than Billings. Missoula seems to be getting a lot of bad news about industry going under while stores keep opening up in Billings with no major hits that I've seen. Many places that were laying off (i.e. Wells Fargo call center) are now hiring again and companies like G.E. have made Billings home.

On behalf of Glendive (and stealing from Blazing Saddles), we'll take Glasgow and Malta, but we ain't taking Miles!GOKATS wrote:I think the folks in Miles City just got their feelings hurt.............gtapp wrote:Billings could include Glendive, Glasgow and Malta!GOKATS wrote:That's a county census, not a city. Are we really having a pissing match about Montana's biggest city?
I'm just glad Bozeman isn't anywhere in the conversation. Missoula/Billings can have all that big city garbage.

It's about a reporter skewing the facts. And if you don't like the argument why did you join the pissing match? Is it too hard for you to ignore? And yeah, Bozeman isn't getting any of the big city garbage like the box stores.FTG06' wrote:Are we really having a pissing match about Montana's biggest city?

I like having the big box stores like Costco, means I don't have to drive to Billings.Cat-theotherwhitemeat wrote:It's about a reporter skewing the facts. Re: Missoula, Montana's largest city?
regardless, the article is just ridiculous. what is missoula suddenly going to get like 40,000 people in their city? and if you take a 50 mile radius around missoula i'm assuming you do the same for billings too right? either way, i'm with CTOWM on this one. it's not going to happen, and it's a little embarrasing that it got published.

The way I look at it is we are all bored and can't wait for football to start to be involved in a thread like this, I sure wish it was fall. No way will Missoula proper ever overtake Billings in our lifetime.

Re: Missoula, Montana's largest city?
you can always tell how bad a place is when people always feel the need to tell everyone how great it is. even when you never asked! butte is a perfect example. of it wasn't such a crap-hole, people wouldn't feel the need to constantly talk about how great it is. we know where the best places in the state are, which is why you don't see countless instances of poeple talking up these places.Old Skool Cat wrote:I thought Butte was the biggest town in Montana. I can't wait to see if Winifred makes it past 150. I think we lost one person on the last census. Just wish I could move back with my family and boost that up another 5.

Re: Missoula, Montana's largest city?
I've been hearing this garbage from Missoula people for practically as long as I can remember. As if any good red-blooded Bobcat fan needed any more incentive to hate the arrogant attitude of the Grizzlies, the University of Montana, and Missoula city/county, this is just a little extra reason to do so. Actually, this moron reporter may have understated her case. I am pretty sure Missoula will surpass Seattle by 2015, and probably LA by 2020.
And if her fairy tale projections don't actually materialize, I'm sure she will just expand her definition of "metro area" to 100 miles, so that she can include the Flathead valley too. Oh, and this just in....the Grizzlies are going to bypass the WAC, and move directly up to the NFL in order to find some viable competition. So much for the Saints chances of repeating....
