Shortly after the Haiti earthquake I looked through a listing of all earthquakes registered by the geological dept and noticed that Yellowstone had had quite a few in the last three days (this was probably a week after)

Today my 2nd grader was asking about the Yellowstone Supervolcano so we looked it up because I couldn't remember when it last erupted. I ran into this page, I don't think it's professionally done but interesting to look at. Is there any talk about the activity around there?

Not sure how accurate the 2nd link is...it doesn't look to be run by scientists.ChiOCat wrote:Shortly after the Haiti earthquake I looked through a listing of all earthquakes registered by the geological dept and noticed that Yellowstone had had quite a few in the last three days (this was probably a week after)

Re: Yellowstone activity
Yeah, that's why I was asking if there's any talk about it there (aka MT area, closer to Yellowstone) I didn't know back in January when I looked at the USGS site if all the activity around Yellowstone was normal or not, now it looks pretty quiet.wbtfg wrote:Not sure how accurate the 2nd link is...it doesn't look to be run by scientists.ChiOCat wrote:Shortly after the Haiti earthquake I looked through a listing of all earthquakes registered by the geological dept and noticed that Yellowstone had had quite a few in the last three days (this was probably a week after)

Re: Yellowstone activity
There has been quite a bit of seismic activity around Yellowstone the past couple months with 'swarms' of small quakes, but I don't think any of it out of the ordinary. Yellowstone is always active.

Yep. The activity was abnormally high last month but it looks like it's tapered off. I think the frequency of Yellowstone erupting is about 600,000 years, and it's been 620,000 years since the last one. We we're due, in geologic terms.GOKATS wrote:There has been quite a bit of seismic activity around Yellowstone the past couple months with 'swarms' of small quakes, but I don't think any of it out of the ordinary. Hopefully it holds out for a few thousand more years because it's gonna be ugly when it happens.

Re: Yellowstone activity
Yellowstone had super-eruptions 2.1 million, 1.3 million, and 0.65 million years ago. If we are looking at gaps between super-eruptions, that gives us 800K and 650K years for our data. I don't know of many scientists that would stake their reputation on predicting the next eruption from 2 data points. One might say the minimum period is 650K years. It's due to erupt now. Another could say the average period is 725K years, so we are 75K years away. Yet another might say that the period of time between eruptions is decreasing by 150K years, so the last eruption should have been after 500K years or 150K years ago. We are REALLY overdue--run for Vermont!catatac wrote:Yep. The activity was abnormally high last month but it looks like it's tapered off. Statistically speaking, two points is not a trend. So, I don't get all worked up about the notion that "it's due (or overdue) to blow." We're all going to be wiped out by an asteroid in December 2012, anyway.
