Reed Point...

The superintendent of a rural Montana school district says he was showing students his black powder muzzleloader when he accidentally fired the weapon into a classroom wall during a history lesson.
Dwain Haggard, who used to be a Civil War re-enactor, was showing the gun to five students in Reed Point High School's American history class Friday when it fired.
No one was injured, and Haggard says he can't explain how the weapon was loaded.
He says he usually fires a cap during the demonstration, but this time there was a loud bang and the room filled with smoke.
The ball shot through the "o" in the word "North" on a wall map.
Haggard says none of the students' parents was upset with him. He described the incident as "bitter irony" because he has tried to increase safety in the school district west of Billings.

It's really just a shame that all of the students weren't packing heat so they could have fired on the guy to protect themselves. What's wrong with our country?

When I was in the 7th grade at CR Anderson here in Helena we had a teacher do the same thing. Except he did it in the indoor firing range at the school. He loaded it and fired the muzzle loader. Pretty cool.
My senior year I took a lifetime sports course at Captial High and they taught us how to reload shotgun shells and then took us to the Helena Trap Club to shoot clay pigeons. Great fun!

Apparently the South is trying to attempt a comeback. Was this just a warning shot?

Hell yes there was a firing range at CRAMS. How else are you supposed to shoot .22's in 6th grade gym class?

Yep, there used to be a class on gun saftey, how to handle and shoot a rifle. It is a .22 range and it is/was located in the basement of CR Anderson. To be honest though, I am not sure if it is still there.

That's a really good question, whether or not its still there! I was just reading about the over crowding @ Rossiter, Jim Darcy, and CRAMS...I bet they took out the range and put class rooms in. Sure hope not though, getting to do that was really cool!

I think the lovely Mrs. Sportin' Life went to that school and she was wondering just a week or two ago if the firing range was still there. I'm glad to get outside confirmation about it. Not that I don't 100% trust everything she says ... I seriously didn't doubt it.

An indoor range is cool....As a sophomore at Fort Benton High, we actually shot trap in PE class. As a teacher, I am still in awe that we were allowed to do that.
But then again, it was Montana. And most of us brought our own shotguns to class.

While in the 8th grade we had a class that we could take instead of PE, in that class we learned orientering, first aid and shooting sports (essentially). The shooting sports included archers, 22 caliber BB guns and 22 caliber shot guns. We also learned to load ammunition.
We would shot the BB guns in the high school math class room and load the ammo in the geography class room. The archery we did take outside and the shot guns we only used when we were out in the field away from the school.

22 caliber shot guns? That's a new one to me.
Maybe he meant 20 gauge?

actually SHE realized in the middle of the night that obviously you can't have 22 claiber bb or shotguns. They were rifles and were exactly the same for the BB and the rifle except for the ammunition used. Sorry, it was late and it happend about 25 years ago....oh and was the only time I ever shot a gun.
