This is how the national anthem should be done!
Yeah I know-soccer sucks...blah, blah, blah. But one thing that's pretty common at soccer games worldwide is the national anthem is sung by everybody-not just some sappy "recording artist" who puts their own special twist on the song. Turn the mic off and the let the fans do it!

As much as I would like to say, "we should do that at Bobcat Stadium." It wouldn't fly because I'm doubtful we could get all the fuddy duds out of their seats let alone sing a song loudly.

I think our biggest problem would be that half our crowd would still be in the parking lot tailgating. But just once I'd love it if the designated singer would ask everyone to sing along as loud as they can and then turn off the mic. I think it'd be pretty cool-especially on flyover day.LongTimeCatFan wrote:As much as I would like to say, "we should do that at Bobcat Stadium." This could actually be a great way to incent people to get into the stadium (and away from their tailgates) in time for the game. If something like this became new tradition, especially one that had a big patriotic angle to it (which is a great motivator, as even a drinking tailgater wants to avoid appearing to place beer over country), it could really be a great way to kick off every Bobcat game!BelgradeBobcat wrote:I think our biggest problem would be that half our crowd would still be in the parking lot tailgating. If we could do this and do it right, do you realize what this would do to the opposition? Yeah, it would set the tone pretty early that this is a hostile environment. Intimidation!

We watched this the other night live because we wanted to see the remodeled stadium in Portland. It was impressive. Thanks BelgradeBobcat for posting it, I never get tired of seeing a patriotic moment. I believe they let you have alcohol in the stadium, that would definately make a difference when trying to get everyone into the stadium in time to do something like this.

Yeah they sell beer inside the stadium in Portand and there isn't much tailgating around it because most people get there on the MAX train or do their pre-game activities at the nearby pubs and bars in the neighborhood.WrestMom4CATS wrote:We watched this the other night live because we wanted to see the remodeled stadium in Portland. I think the singing of the national anthem like that would have to start with the students. The Timbers Army, which is a huge supporters group that stands in the endzone at Timbers games is kind of like a student section at college games (heck most of them are probably PSU students). They bring the energy that the rest of the crowd feeds off of.

Since the band could play the national anthem at every football game, I think this would work perfectly... Everybody just needs to watch the conductor!
To be completely serious, I think this would be a GREAT way to get people into the stadium for the pre-game show and another awesome way for the band to interact with the fans.

I guess I would be a fuddy dud. I've felt since I was a kid that our national anthem should be a moment of silence and that view was reinforced after my time in uniform. I take our flag and national anthem seriously because of what they symbolize: that we have more freedom and liberty than anybody else in the world.Bobcat Sig wrote:Truth. Almost like Thanksgiving, we should take a moment and be grateful for how good we've got it. It pisses me off when people joke around and make a joke of hitting the high note at the end. Just stand there and STFU for about one minute. You've got the rest of the game to party.

Which I guess leads us to the obvious question ... can a person honor the symbolism of the flag in ways beyond standing there in stone-silence? It seems to me that singing the anthem is actually a bit more of a proactive observance of one's respect for the flag than merely standing there, but to each his own. It seems like those who wanted to sign could sing and those who preferred to just listen in silence could do that, and everybody wins!

I can understand that, but you've gotta admit that it would sound a helluva lot better than the abortion that was Christina Aguilera's "rendition" of the National Anthem at the SB a few months back. That was a disgrace.Cledus wrote:I guess I would be a fuddy dud. Didn't see it. I don't have TV, but I did read about it on the interwebs. I hate when singers try to put their artistic touch on it and wind up making it sound worse. Maybe there's actually a name for it, but I hate that "orchestrated quiver" or whatever it's called (that's what I call it) when they make their voice quiver up and down. She's an especially bad offender. I guess the singers want everyone to think they have talent, but I think it sounds plain stupid.grizzh8r wrote:I can understand that, but you've gotta admit that it would sound a helluva lot better than the abortion that was Christina Aguilera's "rendition" of the National Anthem at the SB a few months back. Ehh... maybe I am just a fuddy dud. If everyone wanted to do it there's certainly little I could do to change it. I just wouldn't participate.

Well put Cledus, I hate when people try and make the National Anthem their song, just sing the damn thing the way it is written. Abd I always have to tell some jack wagon to remove their hat when the it is going on. Now I sound like a fuddy duddy and I am only 44. Must be from my days in the Army.

drives me nuts as well. just don't get how people can't do something so simple. i did a small paper on the anthem once and will always remember this quote from nearly 100 years ago. you'd think in that amount of time people would "get" it by now....
Emily Post, in her 1922 book Etiquette, says, "It is not necessary to add that every American male citizen stands with his hat off at the passing of the 'colors' and when the national anthem is played. If he didn't, some other more loyal citizen would take it off for him."
