I found this dead critter in my house and have not been successful in identifying it. Does anybody have an idea what it might be? Not including the legs, it appears to be about .75" to 1.0"

That, my friend, is the notorious Camel spider. A member of the arachnid family, but a different order that normal spiders. Not venomous or poisonous, but their bite can hurt and be very painful. Typically found in desert or arid climates, and usually rare here, this particular species is native to Montana, found mostly east of the Continental Divide. I have found them in my home in Helena; in fact found one in the bathroom sink a few days ago about two inches long. They are very freaky looking, and this particular species was the one of urban legend from the notorious military photo from Iraq:

The first pic I took was just with my iphone. I didn't have the presence of mind at the time to provide any scale... until now. I found one web site that noted a lot of insects are mistaken for spiders but this one does not appear to be one of them. It seems like most spiders have two fangs, but this one seems to have an upper and lower mandible like a beetle. Kind of hard to tell from the pictures, though. It could be a new species of ManBearPig.

Yep -- camel spider. I have seen them as long as four inches in length around here. Here's a good link to a story about a guy finding one in Great Falls:

Here's my tip:

For all future encounters with unknown bugs, take them to your local County Extension Service, which should be in your city/county building. They can usually help identify anything from nature; plant, insect or animal.

I'm no fan of spiders - and I've moved to the wrong place for that!! But I can stay in the same room while my husband or son disposes of them for me
