I think he deserves it after having to come out after 3 quarters with 62 in his pocket. He could've easily went for 70 or 80 that night. I like how it stacks up with Jordan's high of 69 (took O.T.).

i'm not a huge kobe guy. but that was amazing. let the argument begin. i say kobes 81 against this ages competition is more amazing than wilt droppin' 100. takers?

Although I agree ... the NBA is boring to watch on TV. It's fun in person, as the athleticism is so great, but in terms of a compelling "plot," the games just don't hold it for me.

Showing age here (or lack thereof) I grew up with Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, MJ, Joe Dumars, guys like that. Stockton and Malone, David Robinson and Patrick Ewing. With rivalries between the Lakers and the Celtics. The Bulls dynasty and other great teams like the Jazz, Trailblazers and Pacers.

The key word was TEAM.

The NBA has hardly anything to do with a team concept anymore, it's basically an individual superstar leauge. The message that comes from the NBA in most cases is be a ballhog, be in the spotlight, think only of yourself, and winning or losing doesn't matter if you score more than 40 points.

Kobe will probably be the MVP, and the Lakers will probably not make it to the playoffs, but as long as the guy can keep his scoring average up!

Thats why I like the NFL, MLB and even Hockey better, a single superstar will get you nowhere, you need good coaches, a supporting staff that works with you, and usually a handful of incredibly talented players.

I laughed and laughed when the Olympic "dream team" stumbled in Athens two years ago. A bunch of egotisitcal superstars that didn't play well together, didn't even stay in the olympic village (not fancy enough for them) and didn't care about the team or each other, just their individual preformances.

I used to love watching NBA basketball, now though I would rather watch a couple of no-name college teams play than an NBA game. Just very little interest there, though I will watch a Suns game every now and then if I catch it on the tube.

even those teams that you mentioned had their stars though. bird was one of the best ever. but he didn't shy away from shooting. and as smart as he was, even he took some pretty questionable shots rather than making the extra pass. also, i think that criticizing kobe this year isn't totally fair because his supporting cast is absolutly horrible. smush parker starts! lamar odem is their #2 go-to guy! ouch. kobe has always been a shooter, but imo, if he doesn't take 30 shots a game this season, his team has no chance on making the playoffs. all that being said, i enjoy both college and nba basketball. mainly because they seem like 2 totally different games. college is all about tough defense, 1/2 court executed offense, and adjustments. nba is all about athleticism. while the players are althetic as hell, the style of play is just slow and relaxed. and i'm a minnesota guy so i could watch kg all night every night. that guy is a throwback who plays the game right.

ill have to agree with remax about this **lets this board recover from the shock of that first sentance*

real basketball is a team game, you know extra passes, cutting and the like. if you have to put in 81 points in order to win all it does is show the world that you are out for youself and noone else.

btw i revise my statement earlier...Kobe should not be retired, he should be in a colorado prision, in general population

There is nothing wrong with 81 from Kobe. He didn't just take layups and dunk the ball all game either. I think he had 7 threes that game too. Kobe did it all over the court and I think he should be getting props for this. No one is chastising Wilt for his 100 point performance. We should all be applauding Kobe. Dont get me wrong, I hate the Lakers, but this is a huge feat that will be hard to surpass again.

Exactly, I do not have much good to say about Kobe other than he knows how to shoot. SO WHAT!

Basketball is about creating for others and taking shots that come to you. It will always be that the better team wins over the more talented individuals. If I were the Lakers I would be worried about where the team is headed. But I'm not and do not like the NBA either.

College sports all the way... baby.
