Jessica Simpson passes on GOP fundraiser
WASHINGTON (AP) — Jessica Simpson loves President Bush. She's just not a big fan of Republican fundraisers.

The Hollywood starlet and tabloid cover girl was on Capitol Hill Thursday to lobby Congress for Operation Smile, an organization that provides reconstructive surgery to children with facial deformities. But all anyone wanted to know was why she turned down an invitation to attend a Republican fundraiser with Washington's top star — Bush.

"We went back and forth and we could never get the details worked out," said her father and manager Joe Simpson. "When it became obvious that it was not just a state dinner, it was more of a fundraising event, that is the wrong purpose of why we are here."

Still, he said of the president, "We are huge fans of him and of his family, his girls. Jessica loves the heck out of him."

In fact, he said they were still trying to squeeze in a meeting with the chief executive. "We are trying to get in and out," he said.

Jessica Simpson is best known for the MTV reality show Newlyweds with now-estranged husband Nick Lachey and for her denim-cutoff role in the movie The Dukes of Hazzard.

The actress, who refused to comment on the fundraiser, is to head back to New Mexico Thursday to resume shooting of a movie, Employee of the Month, according to her publicist Rob Shuter.

Rep. Tom Reynolds, R-N.Y., chairman of the GOP campaign committee hosting the fundraiser, said the group had hoped Simpson would attend.

"I know my daughter's a fan. She's a celebrity that was going to come. Now she's a celebrity that is not," Reynolds told reporters.

Asked about Simpson's absence from the GOP dinner, House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, told reporters: "You know, I really feel like I got bagged."

Good for her. Avoiding being a pawn for a political party fundraising event (either party) is very good judgment on her part.

Not having Jessica Simpson as your spokesperson for your political party sure doesn’t hurt you image.

She's relatively articulate ... that's an improvement.

But yeah, in absolute terms, she's not a real political prize.

What I don't get is why people are slamming Jessica over this. She turned down dinner with the President, and she gave a very sound and thoughtful reason for doing so. In response, she's been labeled everything from a bimbo to a talentless hack. Why the hatred?

Her beinga talentless bimbo hack is a completely different story from her declining the invite, is that what you're saying

Not exactly, but I guess that's one way to put it.

I guess to me, though, the fact that she turned down dinner with the President shows a certain amount of fortitude, and that's not something I would knock her for. The "bimbo-like" thing to do would have been to say "dinner with the President? Cool! *giggle*" Instead, she turned down the invitation, and gave an articulate and well-reasoned explanation for doing so. I'm not a huge fan of her music either, but I can respect her reasons for turning down this event.

The irony in all of this is that, had she gone to the GOP fundraiser, a lot of the people who are now slamming her for not going would probably instead be putting her on a pedestal and talking about how refreshing it is that at least someone in the entertainment industry isn't a tree-hugging liberal hippy from Hollywood.

Naw...I wouldn't knock anyone for attending any political function if they had a legitimate and well-stated reason for being there. I might knock someone who attended such a function just for the sake of being seen there, but that's another issue. What's bothering me about this case, though, is that she had a legitimate and well-stated reason for not being there, and she's still getting reamed for not going.

I seen her in Chili's in Downtown Denver. Dumb or not, she's fuggin' smokin'.

I would say she's portrayed as a dumb bimbo but my guess is she's got more money than most of us on here. She can't be that dumb.
